{"id":223,"date":"2022-01-02T09:09:29","date_gmt":"2022-01-02T09:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/accommodating-diversity-in-the-workplace\/?page_id=223"},"modified":"2024-09-23T09:04:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T08:04:12","slug":"menopause-and-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/accommodating-diversity-in-the-workplace\/current-projects\/menopause-and-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Menopause and the workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span data-contrast=\"none\">Women aged 50 and above are the fastest growing economically active group in the UK<a href=\"#fnm1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.Despite their growing numbers, 1 in 3 women leave paid employment early, before the state pension age, and a third do not have adequate savings for retirement<a href=\"#fnm2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. With nearly 8 in 10<a href=\"#fnm3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> menopausal women in paid work, menopause transition may be an important factor in decreased workplace participation, with evidence suggesting that (peri)menopausal symptoms push women to make work changes such as reducing their working hours or taking early retirement<a href=\"#fnm4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This project aims to examine the impact of menopause on working women with a view to better understanding their lived realities and how employment practices and policies can help during this period. The project is being led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henley.ac.uk\/people\/tatiana-rowson\">Dr Tatiana Rowson<\/a> and the project aims to:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Use secondary data to identify broad challenges and trends in a representative samples of the UK female population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Build on pilot interviews conducted by Dr Tatiana Rowson in July 2021, <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" data-contrast=\"none\">to capture lived experiences of menopausal women, particularly those who felt their career or work changed (or had to change) because of the menopause transition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Design and run a survey targeting employees (women, men; including line managers) to collect information on experience, knowledge, beliefs and attitudes of both menopause and policy\/practice.<\/li>\n<li>Undertakes some organisation case studies to understand existing policy\/practice to understand what works and what doesn\u2019t work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Our very own Professor Grace James has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/epdf\/10.1007\/s10691-024-09555-y?sharing_token=UZpD5W02Y1bnE6nWm13Uwfe4RwlQNchNByi7wbcMAY4fOu02FW-ZPlt1GiGQtex3YA8m_iA1KFzu1179Z9ayLjCfDqaXWX-_p522TRwxTl5tv_z4BY1NCIbx5fZMGWzLj0yc7BYSliy64aCPpYW0Y_bBpCEwN_7n79SGNUm_4ME%3D\">critique of <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\">\u00a0of labour law\u2019s engagement with menopausal <\/span><\/span><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\">workers in the UK. Her critique argues &#8220;<span class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Effective labour laws could better <\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\"><span class=\"current-selection\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">support menopausal workers: labour laws could encourage long term individual <\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\"><span class=\"current-selection\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and organisational resilience by adopting more effective anti-discrimination and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\"><span class=\"current-selection\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dismissal protections and more strongly centring negotiation as a realistic strategy <\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"current-selection\"><span class=\"current-selection\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for menopausal workers and employers when navigating any tensions that arise.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you are an organisation that would be interested in becoming a case study or would like to co-design workplace policy\/guidance, please contact us using our <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/accommodating-diversity-in-the-workplace\/contact\/\">contact form<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ol>\n<li><a id=\"fnm1\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">ONS (2019).
