If you do not have access please place a request through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uor.topdesk.net\">DTS Self Service Portal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4884  colorbox-4528\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/Unorganized\/mft-diagram.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/Unorganized\/mft-diagram.png 643w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/Unorganized\/mft-diagram-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Protocols<\/h2>\n<p>It supports the following protocols:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>https<\/li>\n<li>sftp<\/li>\n<li>scp<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Default directories<\/h2>\n<p>The following directories are mounted on MFT by default:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4533 size-medium colorbox-4528\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/screenshots\/MFT\/MFT-default-view-300x136.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/screenshots\/MFT\/MFT-default-view-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/screenshots\/MFT\/MFT-default-view.png 605w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your unix home directory (reachable on \/home\/users\/&lt;username&gt; from a linux server)<\/li>\n<li>mft-scratch directory, for transfer of bigger files that cannot be hosted on your home directory. Note that this directory is visible by all users and you shouldn&#8217;t use it for sensitive information. (path is \/storage\/silver\/mft-scratch)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">It is good practice to create a sub-folder with your username and put your content in it<\/span>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">\/mft-scratch\/ will be emptied from time to time without any notice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>storage-sftp (requires setup, see below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Connect to MFT<\/h2>\n<p>The MFT service is available to all staff and students. However, from January 2021, if you haven\u2019t used it before you will need to request access through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uor.topdesk.net\">DTS Self Service Portal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following connection methods are supported.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Web interface:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mft.act.reading.ac.uk\/\">https:\/\/mft.act.reading.ac.uk\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>sftp: <span class=\"top-set:false bottom-set:false lang:default decode:true crayon-inline\">sftp &lt;username&gt;@mft.act.reading.ac.uk<\/span><\/li>\n<li>scp: <span class=\"lang:default decode:true crayon-inline\">scp filetocopy &lt;username&gt;@mft.act.reading.ac.uk:.\/&lt;username&gt;\/destfilename<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can use any client for sftp or scp, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/\">filezilla,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/winscp.net\/eng\/index.php\">winscp<\/a> or the sftp,scp command line in Linux or Windows 10. Some examples are given for file transfer via scp are given <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/knowledgebase\/linux-file-transfer\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Transfer files between a remote client and my unix home directory<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crushftp.com\/crush9wiki\/Wiki.jsp?page=Downloads\">download<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crushftp.com\/crush9wiki\/Wiki.jsp?page=Uploads\">upload<\/a> files from your you unix home directory ot the mft-scratch directory using the<a href=\"https:\/\/mft.act.reading.ac.uk\"> web interface<\/a>\u00a0 or you can use the sftp or scp protocols with your preferred application. Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/sftp-command-examples\/\">link to an sftp cheat sheet<\/a> if you are using a command line interface.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Share files and directories with others<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crushftp.com\/crush9wiki\/Wiki.jsp?page=Sharing\">share<\/a> files or directories in your home directory or the mft-scratch directory by sharing a link on a time limited basis using the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.act.reading.ac.uk\/\">web interface<\/a>, navigate to the file or directory you want to share, click on <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4534 colorbox-4528\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/screenshots\/MFT\/MFT-share-button.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"67\" height=\"28\" \/> button, fill in the form with the email address of the person with whom you want to share the link.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Receive files from an external partner<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">When sharing a directory, select the &#8220;advanced option&#8221; and tick &#8220;full access&#8221;. The person you&#8217;re sharing with will then be able to upload content into this directory! <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Caution: only give full access to a sub-directory and to people you trust. Anybody receiving the link could potentially upload or delete anything in that folder!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"Storage\"><\/a>Transfer files to \/ from the research storage<\/h2>\n<p>You can use folder storage-sftp to access the research storage, but you can not share files or directories in research storage with other users. To access storage-sftp you have setup a private key in \/home\/users\/&lt;username&gt;\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage and have the public key in \/home\/users\/&lt;username&gt;\/.ssh\/authorized_keys. This can be done with the following commands in a terminal window on https:\/\/nx.reading.ac.uk:4443<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">mkdir -p ~\/.ssh\/keys\r\nchmod 0700 ~\/.ssh\r\nssh-keygen -t ed25519 -f ~\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage\r\ncat ~\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage.pub &gt;&gt; ~\/.ssh\/authorized_keys\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>If you already have a ssh key in ~\/.ssh\/authorized_keys that you want to use that does not have a passphrase (not recommended) you can just create soft link instead<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">ln -s ~\/.ssh\/id_rsa ~\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage<\/pre>\n<p>The reason for using the keys subdirectory is to limit the number of keys automatically used by ssh\/sftp\/scp.<\/p>\n<p>The mft system will us e the private key in ~\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage to access the \/storage files. You can check if it is working correctly by running the following command from\u00a0 \/home\/users\/&lt;username&gt; on a <a href=\"https:\/\/nx.reading.ac.uk:4443\">nxnode<\/a> or the RACC<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">sftp -i ~\/.ssh\/keys\/mft-storage nxnode1.rdg.ac.uk<\/pre>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Use an SSH key with sftp\/scp<\/h2>\n<p>If you put\u00a0 public in one of the following files then you can use the private key with sftp or scp\u00a0 to access mft.act.reading.ac.uk<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">~\/.ssh\/mft_authorized_keys.d\/id1.pub\r\n~\/.ssh\/mft_authorized_keys.d\/id2.pub\r\n~\/.ssh\/mft_authorized_keys.d\/id3.pub\r\n~\/.ssh\/mft_authorized_keys.d\/id4.pub<\/pre>\n<p>It is possible that in the future you might need both an ssh key and a password to be able to use sftp.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to data transfers we can use use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crushftp.com\/crush9wiki\/Wiki.jsp?page=Jobs\">jobs<\/a> for example to upload files that have changed on a remote site or copy files that have been uploaded to a local user to a research data storage, alternatively\u00a0 you could use <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/act\/knowledgebase\/act-ssh-connection-caching-for-automated-data-transfers-from-unix\/\">act-ssh connection caching<\/a> to transfer files using a pre authenticated ssh connection.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Synchronize a directory between multiple PCs (in and out of the University)<\/h2>\n<p>A tool is provided to manage 1 direction or 2 directions synchronizations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crushftp.com\/crush7wiki\/Wiki.jsp?page=CrushSync\">Read more on the CrushSync documentation here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before you go<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ask us to activate the sync tool on the directory you want to sync (can be in the research storage or home directory): <a href=\"https:\/\/uor.topdesk.net\">contact us (&#8220;Report an Incident&#8221; to put a ticket)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>make sure you have java installed on your PC. The CrushSync client software is using java web start. <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/corretto\/\">Download java&#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>CrushSync is compatible with all kind of machines: Windows, Linux, Mac&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Installation steps<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>download the client from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.act.reading.ac.uk\">MFT web interface<\/a> (we should have added the link for you)<\/li>\n<li>when prompted, choose a sync admin password that will be the same on all clients you want to synchronize<\/li>\n<li>launch the .jnlp file you just downloaded. If it does&#8217;t start as a java web start applet, make a right-click, open with, select the program &#8220;Java Web Start Launcher&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>You should now have a small CrushSync icon in the notification tray. Right-click and open the Sync Manager.
