The aim is to track what people eat and drink in their daily lives, with accuracy and reliability that surpasses current\u00a0approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SODIAT-2\u00a0study\u00a0is a partnership between University of Reading, Aberystwyth University, University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Funding is\u00a0from the UK\u2019s Medical Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Manfred Beckmann, lead Principal Investigator from the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the problems facing nutrition researchers is getting a true picture of people\u2019s eating habits. By developing a new\u00a0methodology, we aim to get a much more\u00a0accurate\u00a0record of people\u2019s diets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Participants in the study will wear camera glasses, as well as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">giving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0blood and urine samples, and filling out online questionnaires. These tools make it easier to gather\u00a0accurate\u00a0information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Professor Julie Lovegrove, University of Reading, is leading the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and said \u201cThis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is a\u00a0game-changer\u00a0for public health and nutrition research.\u00a0Currently we\u00a0use\u00a0tools\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to assess what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eat\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">including\u00a0food diaries,\u00a024-hour dietary recalls\u00a0that rely on someone remembering what theyconsumed\u00a0the previous day,\u00a0or food frequency\u00a0questionnaires<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that record<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0over a longer\u00a0timeframe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the past\u00a0month<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0However, humans are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not\u00a0very reliable, especially\u00a0when asked to\u00a0remember\u00a0snacking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0portion sizes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Michelle Weech<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Research Fellow at the University of Reading and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0manager said\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">automatically photographing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0everything\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they eat and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drink and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0measuring\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">substances<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the body makes from food\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in their blood and urine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we will have\u00a0dietary\u00a0data we can really rely on.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The participants will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">making a valuable contribution to pioneering nutrition research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ese tools have the potential to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">revolutionise nutrition res<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">earch<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by providing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">greater\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">accuracy in dietary assessment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, allowing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0researchers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0explore relationships between diet, health and diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers, with greater confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-contrast=\"none\">How the Study Works<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The SODIAT-2 Study will recruit 133 adults across the\u00a0UK\u00a0to take part in\u00a0a five-week\u00a0program\u2014all from the comfort of their own homes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For up to 12 days, p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">articipants will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">automatically\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">take photos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">capturing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0what they eat and drink.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">analys<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">substances<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">flecting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the foods and drinks\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0eaten.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-contrast=\"none\">using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">short\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">online food and drink questionnaires<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">By com<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">bining<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0these methods,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the team will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0find out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the best way to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0diets in real
