{"id":679,"date":"2019-04-16T10:42:05","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T09:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/american-history-politics\/?p=679"},"modified":"2019-06-13T09:26:27","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T08:26:27","slug":"bisa-us-foreign-policy-working-group-annual-conference-call-for-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/american-history-politics\/bisa-us-foreign-policy-working-group-annual-conference-call-for-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"BISA US Foreign Policy Working Group Annual Conference &#8211; Call for Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The call for papers is now out for BISA&#8217;s (British International Studies Association) US Foreign Policy Working <a href=\"https:\/\/usfpgroup.org\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Group<\/a> annual conference, which this year is to be held at University College Dublin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ucdclinton.ie\/\">Clinton Institute<\/a> for American Studies.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span class=\"emphasise\">Keep up to date with the conference news and call for papers at their website <a href=\"https:\/\/usfpgroup.org\/2019-conference-1\" class=\"broken_link\">https:\/\/usfpgroup.org\/2019-conference-1<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>They are inviting proposals of individual papers or panels on any aspect of US foreign policy, contemporary or historical and from a range of scholarly perspectives, including International Relations, Political Science, History, Economics, and other related disciplines. Possible topics for papers and panels might include US foreign policy as it relates to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>race, gender, and human rights<\/li>\n<li>regional\/global power shifts\/dynamics<\/li>\n<li>terrorism and counterterrorism<\/li>\n<li>cyber conflict and cyber security<\/li>\n<li>nuclear proliferation\/weapons<\/li>\n<li>trade and finance<\/li>\n<li>multilateral organizations and institutions<\/li>\n<li>energy and environmental policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More focused papers might include President Trump\u2019s foreign-policy initiatives, as well as the future of US grand strategy. The conferences is also supportive of panels that incorporate outside perspectives such as Chinese, Russian, Iranian, or European reflections on US foreign policy.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"emphasise\">Funding<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The USFP group are keen for papers to reflect the diversity of US foreign policy by encouraging papers from women and BAME delegates. To support this issue of diversity there is some funding to those panels that expand their base and focus. There is also a limited number of bursaries available for strong proposals from Early Career Researchers, determined by being either a doctoral candidate or having a fixed term teaching post, postdoc etc. To provide confirmation please submit a CV with the necessary details. ECRs with a full-time permanent position will not be considered.<\/p>\n<h3><b><span style=\"font-size: large\">Paper and panel proposals should be submitted to the Working Group convenor, Dr Eugenio Lilli<\/span><\/b> (<a>eugenio.lilli@ucd.ie<\/a>) <strong>by the deadline of 26th May 2019.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span class=\"emphasise\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>BISA\u2019s working group on US foreign\u00a0 policy is a large and diverse international network of academics,\u00a0 scholars, and other professionals active in the analysis of US foreign\u00a0 policy and its related realms. Speakers bring expertise on US political,\u00a0 economic and security dynamics in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and\u00a0 elsewhere; on the international records of US presidents and\u00a0 administrations, past and present; on US engagement with key global\u00a0 institutions and organizations; and across numerous other arenas of\u00a0 historical, contemporary, and future significance.<\/p>\n<p>This year Keynote Speakers so far include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Painter<\/strong>, long-time US official who has occupied high-level positions at the Department of Justice, FBI, the National Security Council, and more recently the State Department where he was the nation\u2019s top cyber diplomat, leading US efforts in advancing the diplomatic aspects of cyber issues ranging from national security to human rights matters. The full bio of Mr Painter can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberstability.org\/commissioners\/christopher-painter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ulrike Franke<\/strong>, policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and part of ECFR\u2019s\u00a0New European Security Initiative. Ms Franke\u2019s expertise covers the impact of new technologies, such as drones and artificial intelligence, on the future of warfare.
