{"id":300,"date":"2023-06-15T17:19:09","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T16:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/applied-weather-climate\/?page_id=300"},"modified":"2023-06-30T15:57:28","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T14:57:28","slug":"el-nino","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/applied-weather-climate\/el-nino\/","title":{"rendered":"In The News: El Ni\u00f1o"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With an El Ni\u00f1o event now declared in the Pacific Ocean, we explore how research at the University has changed what we know about El Ni\u00f1o events since the last big one in 2015\/2016.<\/p>\n<h3>Preparing for floods<\/h3>\n<p>Research carried out at the University has contributed to how the El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences t<a href=\"https:\/\/hess.copernicus.org\/articles\/25\/3875\/2021\/\">he likelihood of flooding in the Amazon basin<\/a>, showing that only parts of the basin are affected. Our understanding of the importance of ENSO across Sub-Saharan Africa has been improved by looking at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212094721000402\">the role of other modes of climate variability<\/a>, such as the Indian Ocean Dipole, in driving flooding. In many parts of the world, seasonal hydrological forecasts produced by the Global Flood Awareness System (co-developed by researchers at the University) are able to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/2515-7620\/ab114e\/meta\">more skillful predictions<\/a> than knowledge of what has happened in past events.<\/p>\n<h3>Global Influence of ENSO<\/h3>\n<p>During strong El Ni\u00f1o events, the warmer atmosphere can hold as much as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2022JD036728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">300 cubic kilometres more water<\/a> as invisible vapour\u00a0(that\u2019s the volume of 120 million Olympic swimming pools)! However, in the long-term, warming due to rising greenhouse gas levels is adding over 100 cubic kilometres of water to the atmosphere every decade. The strong 2015\/16 El Ni\u00f1o was associated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1175\/2016BAMSStateoftheClimate.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"6\">very dry conditions over northern parts of South America, southern Africa and Australia<\/a>\u00a0and ongoing research suggests that this has sapped the ground of its water supply in places. The reverse happened in the strong La Ni\u00f1a of 2011 in which so much rain flooded into drylands, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2012GL053055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"7\">sea level temporarily fell<\/a>\u00a0before this water found its way back into the water cycle.<\/p>\n<h3>Trends in ENSO<\/h3>\n<p>There have been an unusual number of La Ni\u00f1as in the first decade of the 2000s as well as a very lengthy one recently (late 2020 to early 2023) and this unusual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2022JD036675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">pattern of warming can affect clouds and how they influence global warming<\/a>.
