{"id":1367,"date":"2023-03-10T14:37:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T14:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/astor100\/?p=1367"},"modified":"2023-03-10T14:37:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T14:37:36","slug":"congratulations-dr-melanie-khuddro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/astor100\/congratulations-dr-melanie-khuddro\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Dr Melanie Khuddro!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Announcement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here at the History Department at the University of Reading we are delighted to announce that our Astor100 stalwart and PhD researcher, Melanie Khuddro is now Dr Melanie Khuddro having successfully completed her viva on International Women&#8217;s Day 8th March.\u00a0 Our sincere thanks to the examiners Professor Cait Beaumont (LSBU) and Dr Mara Oliva (UoR).<\/p>\n<p>Melanie&#8217;s thesis tackled: &#8216;persistent questions relating to New Religious Movements in the late nineteenth century and its subsequent impact on early female adherents. In particular, Christian Science is explored as the first and largest female-founded denominational faith within the movement, positioning the institutor, Mary Baker Eddy, as an essential feature of the religion. Women within the Church utilised the unique theology, teaching, and structure of Christian Science to bolster their own positions of influence and power in various contexts beyond the confines of the Church.&#8217; it included a consideration of the influence of Christian Science on early female MPs.<\/p>\n<p>It was a wonderful <strong>International Women&#8217;s Day<\/strong> #IWD2023 more broadly here at Reading, two fantastic female <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">PhD students, Aisha Ajelid <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aishadjelid\">@aishadjelid\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> and Melanie <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MelanieKhuddro\">@MelanieKhuddro <\/a><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">passed their vivas. My existing research 'The soul of the Labour Movement' is a detailed examination of the Victorian morality and spirituality upon which the life of the Labour movement was built and includes the wider contribution of the women's movement, children's associations and radical literary traditions. My current research concerns early female pioneers in politics, focusing largely on female MPs between 1919 and 1931 primarily as 'sex-candidates'. I examine the contribution of early female MPs but also reassess the importance of the 1918 Representation of the People Act on British democracy, in relation to women and the emergence of female politicians - I am particularly interested in Nancy Astor, who was the first female MP to sit in the House of Commons and whose papers are held at the University of Reading.
