The digital exhibition \u2018An Unconventional MP\u2019: The political career of Nancy Astor in 50 documents\u2019<\/strong>, showcases documents from the Nancy Astor Papers that illustrate her political career and her legacy. The digital exhibition can be found in a weekly format on Twitter @LadyAstor100<\/p>\n

The documents and images are from the Astor Papers and communicate key milestones in Astor\u2019s career; they illustrate her legacy from her election in 1919, the anniversary of her maiden speech in February 1920 and through until her retirement in 1945. You may need to scroll down a little to find them, you will also find more than 50 as we uploaded some supporting material. Let us know if it is useful.<\/p>\n

My current research concerns early female pioneers in politics, focusing largely on female MPs between 1919 and 1931 primarily as 'sex-candidates'. I examine the contribution of early female MPs but also reassess the importance of the 1918 Representation of the People Act on British democracy, in relation to women and the emergence of female politicians - I am particularly interested in Nancy Astor, who was the first female MP to sit in the House of Commons and whose papers are held at the University of Reading. After spending several years working in heritage, I remain interested in archives and collections, material culture, museums and
