{"id":1820,"date":"2024-07-02T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T10:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/autism\/?page_id=1820"},"modified":"2024-07-10T13:43:39","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T12:43:39","slug":"interventions-scips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/autism\/support-and-training\/interventions-scips\/","title":{"rendered":"Interventions (SCIPS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-1820\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-1820-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-1820-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1820-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Social Communication and Interaction Pre-School Supports (SCIPS)<\/h3>\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><strong>Please note that referrals to\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0should be made through the paediatric SLT clinic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/slt-clinic\/make-a-referral-to-the-paediatric-clinic\/\">MAKE A REFERRAL<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your interest in\u00a0SCIPS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is\u00a0SCIPS?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SCIPS\u00a0is designed for preschool children who are autistic, waiting for an autism assessment or have difficulties with social communication difficulties.\u00a0 The programme aims to promote your child\u2019s social communication development by providing you with strategies to support meaningful social communication with your child.\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0focuses social communication, including sharing attention and play, responding to others, initiating interaction and developing communication and language.<\/p>\n<p>The approach is appropriate for children who are not yet talking through to children beginning to talk in short phrases.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is delivered by student Speech and Language Therapists who are closely supervised by qualified specialist Speech and Language Therapists and follows evidence-based best practice recommended in National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0involve?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SCIPS\u00a0works by teaching strategies to you which will support their child\u2019s social communication development. In clinic parents are taught and have opportunities to practice the strategies.\u00a0 Parents\u2019 interaction with their child is be video\u2013recorded to provide them with feedback on their use of the strategies and the effect of these strategies on their child. Parents are asked to practice the strategies at home in play and everyday activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your commitment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To attend an introductory online parents\/carers group<\/li>\n<li>To attend an initial assessment online with one of our\u00a0team<\/li>\n<li>Primary carer to attend the University clinic for 9 weekly\u00a0sessions, each lasting about one hour<\/li>\n<li>To agree to student involvement<\/li>\n<li>To agree to videoing for feedback and teaching purposes<\/li>\n<li>To practice the strategies with your child at home in\u00a0play and everyday activities<\/li>\n<li>To attend a follow-up appointment after\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0has finished<\/li>\n<li>Following completion of the programme your child will be\u00a0discharged from our caseload<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How do I know if\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0is appropriate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will look at your referral information to make a decision about whether\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0is appropriate.\u00a0 We normally offer\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0to preschool-aged children with an autism diagnosis and preschool-aged children who have been referred for an autism assessment.\u00a0 For preschool-aged children who have social communication needs we might offer an initial assessment to help us decide if\u00a0SCIPS\u00a0will be helpful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supervising therapists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The programme has been devised by <strong>Dr Tom Loucas<\/strong> and <strong>Sara Fincham-Majumdar<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"panel-1820-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text\" data-index=\"1\" ><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Dr Tom Loucas<\/h3>\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/pcls\/staff\/tom-loucas\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-371 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/autism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/241\/2022\/01\/tomlouca-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Qualified Speech and Language Therapist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (SL01574). Tom has worked with children and adolescents with speech, language and communication needs for more than 20 years. He has specialised in autism since 2001 in both research and clinical settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"panel-1820-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text\" data-index=\"2\" ><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Sara Fincham Majumdar<\/h3>\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/pcls\/staff\/sara-fincham-majumdar\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-367 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/autism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/241\/2022\/01\/sfm-picture-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Qualified Speech and Language Therapist (MSc Reading), registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (SL24467). Sara has worked with autistic individuals and their families since 1998. She qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2007 and has specialised in autism since 2012. Sara is studying for a PhD exploring factors that influence outcomes of support for children with social communication needs, including autism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"panel-1820-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-1820-0-0-3\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><strong>What parents say about SCIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #d2002e\">\u201cIt is helping us a lot. All the strategies \/lessons along with the video feedback help us in understanding the ways to communicate with our child.
