With its extensive range of manuscripts, letters, books, recordings, artefacts, and other materials, it was hailed by renowned film director and screenwriter, Anthony Minghella, as one of the \"best-kept arts secrets in Britain\" (<em>The Observer<\/em>, 17\/09\/06). It has also been recognised as being of national and international importance by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council of Britain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1205 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/murphy-ms-lg-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/murphy-ms-lg-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/murphy-ms-lg.jpg 306w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The collection originated in an exhibition organised by James Knowlson in 1971, for which Beckett and his friends donated materials. Beckett's support of the collection continued until his death in 1989. His personal donations include manuscripts, <em>livres d'artiste,<\/em> and paintings by Geer van Velde, Henri Hayden and Avigdor Arikha. Since then, the archive has continued to grow, with donated and purchased acquisitions including the original <em>Murphy\u00a0<\/em>manuscript, the Knowlson Collection and the Billie Whitelaw Collection.<\/p>\n<p>The collection currently houses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>500+ manuscripts, typescript drafts and notebooks (including Beckett's production notes) dating back to the 1930s.<\/li>\n<li>2000+ Beckett texts and critical works in 20+ languages.<\/li>\n<li>550+ offprints.<\/li>\n<li>170+ periodical titles.<\/li>\n<li>2500+ news cuttings.<\/li>\n<li>600+ autograph letters.<\/li>\n<li>\u2019Stage Files\u2019 documenting 700+ international productions of Beckett\u2019s work.<\/li>\n<li>Annotated production texts.<\/li>\n<li>Books from Beckett\u2019s personal library and many signed editions.<\/li>\n<li>Posters, photographs, ephemera and paintings (several presented to the collection by Beckett himself).<\/li>\n<li>Audio and video recordings.<\/li>\n<li>Dissertations and theses on Beckett.<\/li>\n<li>Large publishing collections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The archive also contains copies of other holdings, such as the 1930s notebooks at Trinity College Dublin.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Catalogues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Over 5000 of the items held are catalogued, including all manuscripts, and almost all books, offprints, stage files, audio-visual media, and other printed materials.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Most of the manuscript and typescript items obtained during the 20th century are described in <\/span><em style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Beckett at Reading: catalogue of the Beckett manuscript collection at the University of Reading<\/em><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">, compiled by Mary Bryden, Julian Garforth, Peter Mills (Whiteknights Press and the Beckett International Foundation, 1998). <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Supplements\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">are available from the Special Collections Service, which\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">contain later additions to the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are also handlists for the correspondence with <a title=\"Download for Ruby Cohn as PDF (new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/web\/files\/special-collections\/cohn.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruby Cohn<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Download for Jocelyn Herbert as PDF (new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/web\/files\/special-collections\/herbert.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jocelyn Herbert<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Download for Pamela Mitchell as PDF (new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/web\/files\/special-collections\/mitchell.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pamela Mitchell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Accessing the Collection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">The Beckett Collection is managed by Special Collections and the Beckett International Foundation. It is housed in the same building as the Museum of English Rural Life, located behind our London Road campus, and is open to all.<\/span>\u00a0Information for visitors, such as opening times and directions, can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/special-collections\/using\/sc-using.aspx\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In order to preserve the originals, please note that copies are normally made available for consultation by visitors. Access to originals is only by agreement with the Directors of the Beckett International Foundation.
