{"id":898,"date":"2020-02-03T12:10:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T12:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/?page_id=898"},"modified":"2020-02-03T13:23:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-03T13:23:38","slug":"doodles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/research\/projects\/completed-projects\/doodles\/","title":{"rendered":"Completed Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-898\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-898-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-898-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-898-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h1>Beckett and the Phenomenology of Doodles:<\/h1>\n<h1>A Visual and Theoretical Analysis (2006 - 2009)<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Funded by the The Leverhulme Trust, this project\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">evaluated the philosophical and aesthetic significance of spontaneous drawing - 'doodles' - in the study of Beckett's work.\u00a0<\/span>While many scholars have analysed and interpreted Samuel Beckett's written and performed work, the doodles contained in his manuscripts and notebooks had never before been considered as a means to illuminate his written ideas, or as visual art in themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">The research made use of the University of Reading's archive collection of manuscripts, notebooks, typescripts, drafts and annotated copies, donated by Beckett and others. <\/span>By <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">cataloguing his doodles and examining them through artistic practice and theoretical work, the project<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"> contributed to a theorisation of doodles, exploring how they relate to psychopathology and the phenomenology of perception.<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-898-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-mobile-last\" ><div id=\"panel-898-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-478 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/beckett-contact-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/beckett-contact-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/Unorganized\/beckett-contact.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-898-0-2\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" ><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-898-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-898-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-898-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Exhibitions and other outputs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Visual artist, Dr Bill Prosser, worked on the collection of Beckett's papers preserved at Reading to investigate the relationship between Beckett's doodles and the philosophical concerns of his writings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Exhibitions of drawings by Prosser were held<\/span> at the Taylor Institution, University of Oxford; Warwick University; The University of Rome; Art et Litterature, Paris; The Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas; the Naughton Gallery, Queen's University, Belfast; St. Mary's Stow, Trinity College Dublin; and the University of California. They have been published together in a book by Prosser titled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/human-wishes-a-selection-of-drawings-based-on-the-marginalia-of-samuel-beckett\/oclc\/551685314\"><em>Human Wishes: a selection of drawings based on the marginalia of Samuel Beckett<\/em> (Reading: University of Reading, 2008)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Prosser also published an essay, \"Object Drawing\" in the <em>Performance Research<\/em> journal (2007).
