{"id":1354,"date":"2021-01-29T10:09:38","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T10:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/?p=1354"},"modified":"2021-01-31T23:00:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T23:00:16","slug":"2020-publications-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/2020-publications-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2020 Publications Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Samuel Beckett Research Centre published a number of journal articles, chapters and books in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/81485\/\"><em>Samuel Beckett&#8217;s Philosophy Notes<\/em><\/a>, edited by\u00a0Steven Matthews, Co-Director of The Samuel Beckett Research Centre, and\u00a0Matthew Feldman, is a major new Beckett text that reveals major aspects of Beckett\u2019s philosophical thought and raises larger questions concerning the relation between philosophy and literature in the twentieth century and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Anna McMullan\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/92830\/\"><em>Samuel Beckett&#8217;s intermedial ecosystems: closed space environments across the stage, prose and media works<\/em><\/a>\u00a0draws on the concept of ecosystems to investigate selected Beckett works across different media which present worlds where the human does not occupy a privileged place in the order of creation: rather Beckett\u2019s human figures are trapped in a regulated system in which they have little agency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book chapters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Bignell\u2019s chapter, <a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/95305\/\"><em>\u201cRandom dottiness\u201d: Samuel Beckett and the reception of Harold Pinter\u2019s early dramas<\/em><\/a> in Influencing Beckett \/ Beckett Influencing (Rakoczy, Tanaka and Johnson, 2020), analyses the significance of Beckett to the British reception of the playwright Harold Pinter\u2019s early work.<\/p>\n<p>In his chapter, <a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/90408\/\"><em>Beckett and television: anachronism as innovation<\/em><\/a> in Samuel Beckett and Technology (Adar, Kiryushina and Nixon, 2020), Jonathan Bignell argues that Beckett\u2019s dramas written for television (from Eh Joe in 1966 to Nacht und Traume in 1983) work as reflexive analyses of television technology\u2019s uneasy position as an \u201cold\u201d and also a \u201cnew\u201d medium.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0his chapter, <a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/94954\/\"><em>\u2018The air is full of our cries\u2019: staging Godot during apartheid South Africa<\/em><\/a> in Beckett and Politics (Davies and Bailey, 2020), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/film-theatre-television\/staff\/dr-matthew-mcfrederick\">Matthew McFrederick<\/a> offers new readings into this seminal South African production and the neglected politics of Beckett and race on South African and international stages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/beckett\/about\/people\/l-jeffery\/\">Lucy Jeffery<\/a> (Beckett Research Centre Postdoctoral Fellow) has written\u00a0\u2018<em>Words and Music\u00a0<\/em>\u201cor some other trouble\u201d: Vaguening on the Airwaves\u2019 in\u00a0<em>Beckett and Technology <\/em>(Adar, Kiryushina, and Nixon, 2021).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Journal articles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/english-literature\/aboutus\/Staff\/m-nixon.aspx\">Mark Nixon<\/a>, Co-Director of the Beckett International Foundation, was one of the editors of a special issue of Samuel Beckett Today \/ Aujourd&#8217;hui, <a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/90360\/\">Beckett and Intermediality \/ Beckett, artiste int\u00e9rmedial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/film-theatre-television\/staff\/professor-jonathan-bignell\">Jonathan Bignell<\/a> analyses tensions between medium specificity and intermediality in Beckett\u2019s first original drama for television, Eh Joe (1966) in <a href=\"http:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/88769\/\"><em>Specially for television?
