On Physiology Friday, 14th October 2016, we (Orla and Ioannis) visited Newham Collegiate in East Ham to deliver a demonstration on behalf of the Physiological Society<\/a>! We were invited by\u00a0Dr. Mark Dallas<\/a> (University of Reading, School of Pharmacy) to take part in the activity and we developed a new human-human interface demonstration to introduce the students to physiology.<\/p>\n

The demo was built using a commercial human-human interface (HHI) kit from Backyard Brains<\/a>, that uses electrophysiology to allow one person (the ‘controller) to control the arm of another person (the ‘controlee’). Here at BEL we specialise in developing new brain-computer interfaces so we went one step further and added some EEG control to the HHI kit. Using code developed in-house by\u00a0Maitreyee<\/a>, we were able to link the wireless EEG kit from Emotiv<\/a>\u00a0to the HHI allowing Ioannis to control Orla’s arm using alpha power signal.\u00a0This made for a very exciting, and interactive demonstration on electrophysiology!<\/p>\n

The students and staff at Newham were an amazing and very welcoming audience, and we are very proud to say that they had excellent and very intuitive questions about the demo, physiology and research in general.
