In the UK, caravanning started to gain popularity as early as the 1920s. However, the post-War economic boom in the 1950s, coupled with a rise in car ownership, led to its take off as a mass leisure activity.
This trend was evident in Borth in the development of caravan parks, which helped to grow summer tourism in the village. Caravan parks were important following the decline of Borth’s Grand Hotel.
