Stories of Storms 2025

The ‘Stories of Storms’ project builds on a community initiative, ‘Life on the Edge’ that took place in Borth in 2024 exploring how the village’s history and identity are shaped by its relationship with the sea.

This second project takes this work further by focusing on how memories of storm and flood flood events can help keep community history alive and strengthen connections among residents. It explores the sharing of these memories through art, storytelling, photos and personal objects.

The project aim was to support inclusive community engagement, raise awareness of Borth’s rich maritime heritage, and help shape thoughtful, locally informed approaches to coastal change.

Acknowledgements for the Project

‘Stories of Storms’ was produced by Alex Arnall and Kim Williams. It was based on a research project led by Alex Arnall entitled: ‘Stories of the Sea: Memories of Storms and Shore’.

We are very grateful to the people of Borth who gave their time to speak to us and who wrote and took part in the story telling evening. Special mention also go to Martine Ormerod and Borth Community Hwb for their work in producing the fabulous Art Exhibition. We would especially like to thank Hugh Hughes and the Borth Community Council for supporting our work in the village. Contemporary photographs were provided by Alex Arnall, Kim Williams and Ieuan Ellis.

In Reading, we are grateful to Sascha Valme and Domonique Davies who provided advice and support throughout the project.

The project was funded by an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Impact Accelerator Grant administered by the University of Reading.
