Reading\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The contest was held in front of a packed audience, competition was intense but the Reading team emerged victorious after tough opening heats and a semi-final against Manchester Metropolitan and a final which, as it turned out, was a repeat of the 2019 challenge (held at Reading), with Reading pitted against the home team Liverpool.\u00a0 The event was organised By Dr Meriel Jones with questions devised by Dr John Warren and Professor Rob Marrs and expertly posed by the botanical Paxman for the day, Emeritus Professor Alan McCarthy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1180\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1180\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies.jpg 1965w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies-1024x849.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies-768x637.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/botany\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/Unorganized\/trophies-1536x1273.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The beautiful @BUC2020 Trophies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trophies for BUC2020 were specially designed paper-sculpture models of wild flowers, by Kate Kato of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kasasagidesign.com\/\">Kasasagidesign<\/a>.\u00a0 The winners trophy was a beautiful depiction of Sea Holly (<em>Eryngium maritimum<\/em>) the county flower of Merseyside and the runners up trophy was equally beautiful rendition of Cuckoo Flower (<em>Cardamine pratensis<\/em>) the county flower of Cheshire.\u00a0 To some with local knowledge, the BUC2020 result contained a twist of irony, with the Cheshire flower being won by the team from Liverpool &#8211; the arch rivalry between the two regions being legendary in trade and industry as well on the football pitch!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;letter-spacing: 0.08px\">But botany heals all ills and Botanical University Challenge is a fun, entertaining as well as educational botanical take on the popular BBC TV formula and was devised back in 2015 by John Warren (Aberystwyth University) and University of Reading\u2019s own botanical champion Dr M (Jonathan Mitchley).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><strong>Dr M says:<\/strong> <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;letter-spacing: 0.08px\">\u201cfor too long plants have been relegated to the status of green wall paper through a phenomenon which has been called <a href=\"https:\/\/nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ppp3.36\">plant blindness<\/a>. This is manifested as we humans tend to ignore plants in their environment in preference for more \u201ccharismatic\u201d animals, especially cuddly furry mammals with big eyes and endearing behaviours\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr M continues:<\/strong><em> \u201cBut plants are hitting the headlines more and more, whether through our quest for veganism, desire for beautiful houseplants, need for floodplain vegetation management to alleviate flooding, emergency mass tree-planting to mitigate climate change, or strategies for biodiversity conservation to halt human-induced species extinctions.
