Language and literacy research in CeLM includes researchers from a range of disciplines: linguistics, education, psychology, and clinical language sciences. Our work focuses on language and literacy in diverse linguistic mono- and multilingual contexts, including learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Several researchers in the group have a particular interest in reading capability, from the early development of foundation literacy skills to reading and writing through the school years and into adulthood. Our research aims to probe diverse aspects of these topics, including:
- Underlying cognitive mechanisms
- The role of societal and environmental factors
- The pedagogy of language and literacy learning
Much of our work investigates the development of language and literacy skills, both in typically developing children and those with special educational needs such as dyslexia, autism spectrum conditions and developmental language disorder. We use a range of methodologies, including behavioural research (both qualitative and quantitative), corpus linguistics, eye-tracking and neuroimaging.
