Calling all families! As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, Bilingualism Matters@Reading is hosting a multilingual story time in eight different languages. On Tuesday November 6th 2018 in the children\u2019s section of Reading Central Library, stories will be read between 10am and 2pm, featuring some of the most commonly spoken community languages (other than English) in Reading: Portuguese, Arabic, Bangla, Hindi, Chinese, French, German and Polish. The event is free of charge.<\/p>\n

The advantages of shared book reading for developing new vocabulary, and supporting future academic attainment, are well documented, but there are very few family events conducted in languages other than English. Multilingual Story Time addresses that gap!
\nMultilingual parents and students will read stories and lead fun story-based activities for young children in each language. The event is open to multilingual and monolingual families and is a celebration of both the diversity of languages in Reading and the great research that goes on at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n

There will be drinks and refreshments for everyone and an opportunity to ask experts from the University of Reading about how you can best support your child to speak and read in your home language. The sessions will also provide the opportunity for children and parents\/carers to meet other families who share the same home languages, in order to strengthen communities and build new friendships. We look forward to celebrating diversity with you!<\/p>\n
