Projects

CAMON Open Science. Funder: Mountain Research Initiative and GEO Mountains. 2023-24.

Reducing vulnerabilities of populations in the Central Asia region from glacier lake outburst floods in a changing climate (GLOFCA). Funder: Adaptation Fund. 2021-2026. The project focuses on the assessment and mapping of glacial lakes and vulnerability of local population to glacier lake outburst floods (GLOF), and on the design and implementation of early warning systems. The CAMON observatories provide data to the project and host GLOFCA researchers.

Solutions for Clean Water in Central Asia: What Happens After the Ice? (SCWAI). Funder:  UK Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). 2018-2021. This project involved the CAMON observatories and seven partner institutions in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. The project established and expanded hydrochemistry and water quality analysis facilities. It examined spatial and temporal variability in water quality in rivers and groundwater from the headwaters to the plains. It examined isotopic composition of precipitation, ground water, cryosphere end members and streamflow and produced hydrograph separations for the Ulken Almaty, Ala-Archa, Chon Kyzyl-Suu and Pskem rivers.

Central Asia Water Research and Adaptation Network (CARAWAN). Funder: UK Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). 2019-2021.  This project involved the CAMON observatories and eight partner institutions in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. It established water quality and stable water isotopes monitoring networks within the CAMON observatories.
