The CBCP is delighted to announce our first major team publication.<\/p>\n

The Edinburgh Companion to Women in Publishing, 1900-2020 <\/em>includes interviews with 8 contemporary women in publishing (Helen Huthwaite, Natalie Jerome, Sharmaine Lovegrove, Jennifer Mack-Watkins, Dr Rathna Ramanathan, Hannah Schofield, Rebecca Smart and Farhana Shaikh<\/span>) and explores the variety of women’s little-known work in publishing and the book trade internationally across 33 deeply researched chapters.\u00a0 As we explain in the Introduction (available open access here<\/a>), the book contributes to the new field of feminist publishing history and brings to light the ‘previously undervalued creative and intellectual labour performed by women in creative industries’ (7).<\/p>\n

The book is the fruit of many years work and began with our inaugural conference in 2019.<\/p>\n

CBCP Co-directors Professor Daniela La Penna, Dr Sophie Heywood and Dr Nicola Wilson are editors of the volume, alongside Dr Marrisa Joseph (from CBCP’s management board), along with Dr Claire Battershill, Dr Alice Staveley, Professor Helen Southworth, and Dr Elizabeth Willson Gordon from the Modernist Archives Publishing Project<\/a> (whose founders include the CBCP’s Nicola Wilson).<\/p>\n

The book includes chapters written by CBCP co-director Professor Sue Walker (on designer Marie Neurath), Professor Fiona Ross (on women in type drawing offices, including Monotype), literary agent and CBCP board member Emma Shercliff (on Black women publishers in the UK), current visiting fellow Dr Matthew Chambers (on women bookshop owners) and former CBCP research fellows Dr Liz West (with a chapter on Grace Hogarth and women in children’s book publishing) and Dr D. M. Withers (on Virago Press).<\/p>\n
