MALDI-TOF-MS (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular weight and composition of biomolecules like proteins, peptides, and polymers. In MALDI-TOF-MS, samples are mixed with a matrix material and irradiated with a laser, which causes the matrix to absorb the laser energy and facilitate the ionisation of the sample. The resulting ions are then accelerated through a time-of-flight analyser, which measures their mass-to-charge ratio based on the time it takes for the ions to reach the detector. This technique is valued for its sensitivity, speed, and ability to analyse complex mixtures with high accuracy.
