{"id":284,"date":"2018-01-19T10:20:02","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T10:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/?page_id=284"},"modified":"2021-09-23T14:58:34","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T13:58:34","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is the Infant Vision Laboratory?<\/h2>\n<p>Originally set up in 1997 to research babies\u2019 eyesight, the Infant Vision Laboratory researches many aspects of eye focusing, as people of all ages look at things at different distances.<\/p>\n<p>O<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-594 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"109\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/childrens-vision\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/09\/IMG_1058-scaled-e1632387219575.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/>ur particular interest is in ocular <strong>convergence<\/strong> (to point both eyes inwards to look at close objects) and <strong>accommodation<\/strong> (focusing within the eye to make the object clear).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Typical focusing development across the lifespan<\/li>\n<li>The ocular accommodation convergence linkage<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation and convergence in strabismus (squint)<\/li>\n<li>Eye strain and eye (orthoptic) exercises<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation during reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The understanding and treatment of eye conditions due to these factors are the core work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orthoptics.org.uk\/patients-and-public\/\">orthoptists.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some things make problems with these systems more likely, although they can also come on out of the blue.\u00a0 Problems with binocular vision are more common in children born prematurely, having developmental problems, needing glasses (especially in childhood), having neurological problems, having abnormalities of the eye muscles, and general health issues such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis or high blood pressure. Some of these things tend to run in families.
