What is this document?\u00a0 <\/strong>This document explains what kind of study we\u2019re doing, what your rights are, and what will be done with your data. You should print this page for your records.<\/p>\n

Nature of the study. <\/strong>You are invited to participate in a study which involves naming objects in pictures. Do not worry if you are unsure how a word is spelt. Just write the name for the object as well as you can. After writing down the name, you will see a scale to measure how familiar or unfamiliar you are with the concept presented in the pictures. Before you start, we will ask you some questions about your experience (e.g., age, gender, language background). Your responses will be recorded. We estimate that your session could last for up to 90 minutes. If you leave the survey before completing the questions, your answers will not be saved. Therefore, you need to complete the questions in one sitting. You will be given full instructions shortly.<\/p>\n

Compensation.<\/strong> You will be paid \u00a310 Amazon Gift Voucher for your participation in this study. In order for us to pay you, we will request your email. This will be kept until payment has been processed and will be later deleted.<\/p>\n

Risks and benefits<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are no known risks to participation in this study. Other than the payment mentioned, there no tangible benefits to you, however you will be contributing to our knowledge about the Gaelic language.<\/p>\n

Confidentiality and use of data.<\/strong> All the information we collect during the course of the research will be processed in accordance with Data Protection Law. Your emails will be collected only to process payment and once payment has been processed, it will be deleted. Your data will be only by referred to by a unique participant number. The anonymous data collected during this study will be used for research purposes and may be shared with other researchers or with the general public (e.g., we may make it available through the world wide web, or use it in TV or radio broadcasts).<\/p>\n

What are my data protection rights? <\/strong>The University of Edinburgh is a Data Controller for the information you provide.\u00a0 You have the right to access information held about you. Your right of access can be exercised in accordance Data Protection Law. If you withdraw before completing the survey, you will not receive a monetary reward. You will be unable to withdraw after completing the survey and receiving payment, because your personal data will have been deleted and it will not be possible for us to work out who the answers belong to.<\/p>\n
