{"id":4612,"date":"2022-05-12T18:59:30","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T17:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/cinn\/?p=4612"},"modified":"2026-01-28T16:04:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T16:04:29","slug":"sense-about-science-ecr-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/cinn\/sense-about-science-ecr-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Sense About Science is empowering ECRs to champion public interest in science"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><a title=\"https:\/\/www.senseaboutscience.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senseaboutscience.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sense About Science<\/a> is an independent charity that promotes the public interest in sound science and evidence.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Their many worthwhile activities include:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The <em>John Maddox Prize<\/em>, which recognises the work of individuals who promote science and evidence, advancing the public discussion around difficult topics despite challenges or hostility)<\/li>\n<li><em>Voice of Young Science<\/em>, a unique and dynamic network of early career researchers across Europe committed to playing an active role in public discussions about science and changing the way the public and the media view science and scientists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They also deliver in-person <em>Standing up for Science<\/em> and <em>Quality and Peer Review<\/em> workshops to hundreds of PhD students and early postdoctoral fellows around the country. Events in Exeter, Norwich, Cambridge, London and Edinburgh are already confirmed.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These workshops give ECRs the confidence and skills to contribute their expertise to public debate on science issues, and tackle misrepresentation in the media.
