{"id":7451,"date":"2021-05-22T12:19:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T11:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/cinn\/?p=7451"},"modified":"2025-05-22T12:20:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T11:20:07","slug":"hacvac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/cinn\/hacvac\/","title":{"rendered":"The Haskap Berry Study (HACVAC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image source=&#8221;featured_image&#8221; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]This study is investigating the cognitive, vascular, and metabolic benefits of a vitamin- and mineral-enhanced haskap berry dietary supplement in healthy adults aged 50+.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Berries have previously shown benefits to health (physical and cognitive) due to their high content of certain natural plant-based compounds called polyphenols. Haskap berries are extremely rich in a type of purple-coloured polyphenol called anthocyanins. The berries have recently been designated a traditional food by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and are new to the UK market.<\/p>\n<p>This project aims to investigate the immediate benefits (up to 2 hours after consumption) and longer-term benefits (following 4 weeks daily supplementation) of a vitamin- and mineral-enhanced haskap berry supplement made from freeze-dried, powdered haskap berries. We aim to determine any cognitive, metabolic, or cardiovascular effects over and above haskap powder alone or a placebo powder.<\/p>\n<p>To participate you must meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aged 50+<\/li>\n<li>Daily fruit and vegetable intake \u2264 4 portions per day<\/li>\n<li>Good understanding of the English language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, the following would make you ineligible to take part in this particular study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diagnosis of any psychiatric, cardiometabolic or gastrointestinal disorders<\/li>\n<li>ADHD or dyslexia diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>Antibiotic use within 3 months of signing up<\/li>\n<li>Blood thinning or anticoagulant medication<\/li>\n<li>Unmedicated high blood-pressure<\/li>\n<li>Any food allergy or intolerance<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Regular consumption of more than the recommended units of alcohol per week<\/li>\n<li>Following a vegan or vegetarian diet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study involves three visits to the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading, over a five-week period. You will be asked to perform several cognitive and mood related tasks, have a glucose finger prick test, and take part in flow mediated dilation (FMD), which is a vascular measure taken from your arm using ultrasound.
