SUMMARY:Isaac Newton Institute Satellite Programme: Geophysical fluid dynamics; from mathematical theory to operational prediction
DESCRIPTION:This programme was the inaugural ‘INI@’ Satellite Programme\, and took place at the University of Reading. \nA better understanding of the climate system is of great societal relevance\, due to the importance of reliable environmental forecasts and the looming climate crisis. Recent scientific progress ranges from improving operational forecasting systems to abstract results on infinite dynamical systems. it is of vital importance to bring theses insights together in a proper interdisciplinary environment\, which this programme aims to provide. With a focus on the fluid dynamical components of the climate system\, practitioners will learn from mathematicians and statisticians about new tools and techniques to analyse these\, while at the same time interesting new challenges for the mathematical community will emerge. The programme will address questions relating to geophysical fluid dynamics and forecasting\, such as qualitative and statistical behaviour of geophysical models\, response to deterministic and stochastic perturbations\, sources of predictability at different spatial and temporal scales\, forecast verification\, and data assimilation. SUMMARY:ICMS Advanced Workshop - Mathematics for the Climate Crisis: Extremes and Tipping Points
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Workshop “Mathematics for the Climate Crisis: Extremes and Tipping Points”\nNovember 1st – 5th 2021\nICMS\, Edinburgh\, UK \nBetween November 1-12 2021\, Glasgow will host the UNFCCC COP26\, which will take place under the presidency of the UK. This will indeed be the most important event dealing with multilateral negotiation on climate policy for 2021\, and it is expected (and hoped) that important measures will be taken to deal with the ongoing climate crisis and make sure that we stay within the so-called safe operating space for our planet. \nThis workshop will explore the mathematical bases of the climate crisis\, underlying the properties of tipping points\, extreme events\, and making an assessment of what is known and not known about the current and future risks associated with erratic changes in the climate. The timing of the event is a rare opportunity of being able to match scientific novelty and timeliness of a topic that is rapidly gaining interest and ground\, with the spotlight coming from the presence of a global event taking place in Scotland. There will be a wide range of seminars and lectures from leading academics from the UK\, Europe and the US. \nSo many advanced research and training schools in the last year have either not taken place at all or have taken place in severely limited form. In recognition of current needs among UK and international graduate students and early career researchers\, we are planning for this Workshop to be in-person for participants. The workshop includes opportunities for discussion among younger scientists about different aspects of the mathematics and science of the climate crisis\, as well discussion of its impact on political decision-making. \nThe workshop will include a poster session\, interactive activities and social events. SUMMARY:MS34 Transfer Operator Methods for Open and Nonautonomous Systems with Applications
DESCRIPTION:Nonlinear dynamical systems often exhibit essentially random temporal behavior. It then makes more sense to analyse the statistical long term properties of solution ensembles\, rather than individual solutions. A powerful tool in this analysis is the transfer operator\, which represents the pushforward of densities (wrt some standard volume)\, as the spectral properties of the transfer operator directly relate to statistical properties of the dynamics. This approach was first developed for autonomous systems on compact state spaces. \nIn this minisymposium\, we will consider open systems (where trajectories may escape)\, as well as random systems (resulting in a random transfer operators). Studying the transfer operators again allows conclusions on the long term statistical properties of the dynamics. For open systems for instance one finds conditionally invariant probabilities while random transfer operators can be used to study pullback invariant measures. \nS. Vaienti will give an overview over transfer operator methods in open systems\, while P. Giulietti will talk about statistical extremes for open systems. The work by L. Oljaca uses (Hilbert) projective metrics on cones to analyse random transfer operators which arise in nonlinear filtering (motivated by Data Assimilation techniques in Weather\, Climate\, and Oceans). This motion occurs beyond a grazing bifurcation\, at which alternating top and bottom impacts are supplemented by a zero velocity impact with the bottom of the device. For periodic forcing\, we obtain semi-analytical expressions for the asymmetric periodic motion with a ratio of 2:1 for the impacts on the device bottom and top\, respectively. These expressions are derived via a set of nonlinear maps between different pairs of impacts\, combined with impact conditions that provide jump discontinuities in the velocity. Bifurcation diagrams for the analytical solutions are complemented by a linear stability analysis around the 2:1 asymmetric periodic solutions and are validated numerically. For smaller incline angles\, a second grazing bifurcation is numerically detected\, leading to a 3:1 asymmetry. For larger incline angles\, period doubling bifurcations precede grazing bifurcations. The converted electrical energy per impact is reduced for the asymmetric motions\, and therefore less desirable under this metric.

DESCRIPTION:Workgroup on Climate-Statistical Mechanics – LSCE/SPEC\nMonday Jan 11th 2021\, 13.00 London Time/14.00 Paris time\, Seminar \nValerio Lucarini (University of Reading)\n“Fingerprinting Heatwaves and Cold Spells and Assessing Their Response to Climate Change using Large Deviation Theory” \nExtreme events provide relevant insights on the dynamics of the climate system and their understanding is key to defining useful strategies for mitigating the impact of climate variability and climate change. By applying large deviation theory to the output of a state-of-the-art climate model\, we define the climatology of persistent heatwaves and cold spells in some key target regions of the planet by constructing empirically the corresponding rate functions for the surface temperature\, and we assess the impact of increasing CO2 concentration on such persistent anomalies. In particular\, we can better understand the increasing hazard associated to heatwaves in a warmer climate. We show that two 2010 high impact events – summer Russian heatwave and winter Dzud in Mongolia – are associated with atmospheric patterns that are exceptional compared to the typical ones\, but typical compared to the climatology of extreme events. DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Critical Transitions in Complex Systems 2020 (online)\, 29th – 31st July 2020 \nComplex systems research has been at the forefront of scientific priorities for some time and many very interesting phenomena have been identified and explored in the context of a wide variety of applications. This workshop is part of a series\, reflecting on an emerging movement to develop a mathematical theory for sudden changes in the dynamical behaviour of complex systems\, so-called critical transitions.
