New lumps of hard poo and further disimpactions

How we treat constipation

There are two stages of treatment.

If the poo is really stuck your doctor will want to get it out. Doctors call this disimpaction.

Then, you have to keep using the medicine to make sure that the constipation doesn’t start again. You will also have to help your child to eat well, make sure they drink and exercise. Doctors call this maintenance.

Disimpaction Maintenance

It's important to get out any new lumps of hard poo that may start to form.

Doctors find that one disimpaction is unlikely to get rid of all the hard poo. When children first start seeing the constipation consultant, they may recommend regular disimpactions.

Talk to your nurse and plan this together.

How to fit disimpactions around school and family life

Put aside time when you know you will be at home. For example:

  • Giving more laxative on friday and saturday works well for some families, and it doesn’t interfere with school. This can be done over 2 or 3 weekends in a row.
  • Plan disimpactions over school holidays and half-term.
