Past Events

RCCR events

  • The main RCCR event is the annual ‘Summer Seminar Series’. This takes place over a number of weeks (typically 6-8 sessions of 1.5 hours) and involves Reading staff and students, together with external speakers and participants, coming together to examine a topic of mutual interest over an extended period (see list of past seminars below).
  • In addition, RCCR has organised (either independently or jointly with other groups) a number of conferences or ad hoc events since its inception in 2013 (see list below).

Conferences and One-off Events

RCCR has helped to organise a number of one-off events at Reading, such as:

  • An inaugural two-day conference on experimental approaches to meaning (2014), in conjunction with Ratio, with associated publication edited by Borg & Hansen. Funded by external awards.
  • A Ratio two-day conference on ‘Experimental Philosophy as Applied Philosophy’ (2016), run by James Andow. Funded by external awards.
  • A two-day conference on ‘Pain and Belief: from meaning to modulation’ (2018), run jointly with Reading Emotions. Funded by a range of internal and external awards.
  • A special seminar series on the work of Daniel Dennett (2019), in advance of Dennett’s week-long visit to Reading (events during Dennett’s visit included a public lecture, dedicated meetings with graduate students, and a two-day symposium, where Borg was also a speaker).
  • ‘Truth, Meaning and Polysemy’ workshop (2019) involving ten external UK and European experts in philosophy of language. Funded by an internal award.
  • An internal workshop on ‘The “polyeidic” theory of pain’ involving UK and Canadian experts (2019). Funded by an internal award.
