The psychology of philosophical thought experiments: knowledge, ordinary language, and stakes-sensitivity<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Description<\/strong>: This seminar series will investigate whether\u2014and if so, how\u2014\u201cordinary\u201d ways of understanding philosophical questions diverge from the ways philosophers understand those same questions. We will focus on recent experimental studies of the \u201cstakes sensitivity\u201d of knowledge, which evaluate whether judgments that a person knows something are influenced by the consequences (or \u201cstakes\u201d) of being right and wrong about it. Our aim will be to come to a better understanding of how to design experiments that investigate philosophical questions.<\/p>\n
