[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our work began with the community of Whitley, South Reading. A community variously described with words such as \u2018working-class,\u2019 \u2018disadvantaged\u2019 or \u2018deprived.\u2019 Communities like Whitley tend to be described in the language of \u2018deficiency\u2019 with a focus on the attributes it lacks, and this is often interpreted as a catalogue of weaknesses within the resident population. The stigma arising from this kind of approach can act as a real drag on the way people feel about themselves and about their future.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
The aim of our research in Whitley was to engage with and build upon the community\u2019s\u00a0assets.\u00a0<\/em>It brought about partnerships with community groups and focused on Whitley\u2019s\u00a0people<\/em> by working together in a friendly and inclusive way where everyone\u2019s work was equally valued. This approach encouraged the whole collective to speak up and grapple with real issues, rather than getting superficial responses to the wrong questions.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”238″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”249″ img_size=”600×410″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”291″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n Dr Sally Lloyd Evans and her team equipped local residents with participatory research methods, and strengthened their networks with local service providers. Local residents used their personal connections to access the opinions and experiences of a much wider cross-section of the community.\u00a0This collaborative work gave a voice to the local community, put ownership into local hands, and built channels of communication through which all parties can engage with change.[\/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=””]\u201cOur research centres on collaboration, co-production and participation to help local communities and organisations understand and tackle the complex issues surrounding wellbeing and social exclusion in Reading. By training local communities in all aspects of the research process, from design and data analysis to report writing and dissemination, we\u2019ve empowered the community to take action themselves to shape local service provision and policy.\u201d\u00a0 \u2014 Dr Sally Lloyd Evans<\/strong>[\/vc_cta][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”461″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]Then, in 2014, Sally was approached by the late John Ord<\/a>, the Whitley Big Local Representative, and Whitley Community Development Association (WCDA) to facilitate a community-led research project to tackle social exclusion and mobility in Whitley.\u00a0One of the project\u2019s aims was to understand the travel needs in Whitley and identify transport barriers that could be addressed. The project was part\u00a0of the Whitley Big Local initiative, funded by the National Lottery\u2019s \u00a31 million grant to 150 disadvantaged communities in the UK, empowering them to help themselves and build close community ties.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]The output\u00a0from this initial research project led to immediate change for the community, with the local transport authorities working to change the bus routes through Whitley, allowing residents better access to schools, work and the hospital. Moreover, the researchers gained new skills and the partnerships continued to develop. It became noticeable that the collaborations with various organisations connected with and fed each other.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This project\u00a0marked the genesis of the community research network, the\u00a0Whitley Researchers<\/a>. The researchers worked part-time hours to suit their lives, and were paid the Reading living wage. The Whitley Researchers became part of WCDA, and partnered with the University of Reading.[\/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=””]\u201cHaving something solid, well consulted, well written and well supported by your community makes you successful.
