{"id":1769,"date":"2017-02-17T12:18:41","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T12:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/community-based-research\/?p=1769"},"modified":"2023-11-22T10:58:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T10:58:30","slug":"young-whitley-researchers-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/community-based-research\/young-whitley-researchers-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Young Whitley Researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>The story<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Through the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">community-based research in Whitley<\/span>, a new research group evolved \u2013 the \u2018Young Researchers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>With collaborative support from the John Madejski Academy, the Young Researchers were set up to mirror the concept of the Whitley Researchers, but represent and give a voice to young people. The work of the Young Researchers highlights how strongly youth aspirations depend on the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Place:<\/strong> The ideas, constraints, role models and opportunities that we are exposed to as we grow up shape our choices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationships:<\/strong> Positive and collaborative two-way communication with (and between) the people in our lives makes a huge difference to our outlook.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pathways:\u00a0<\/strong>having aspirations is only part of the story \u2013 most of us need a little help in exploring the\u00a0<em>pathways<\/em> to fulfilling our dreams too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voice:\u00a0<\/strong>Being given\u00a0the opportunity to speak for ourselves and pursue our own interests<br \/>\n(with consideration for the interests of others) allows us to develop and thrive as people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;323&#8243; img_size=&#8221;600&#215;400&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;439&#8243; img_size=&#8221;600&#215;400&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;469&#8243; img_size=&#8221;600&#215;400&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Research journey<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]As the group\u2019s understanding of their role developed the Young Researchers became increasingly confident with gathering research material from groups that are sometimes quite difficult to reach. \u00a0The work of this group continued to evolve as their role within the school and the Whitley community developed.<\/p>\n<p>A series of interactive research activities were designed by the Young Researchers to open up conversations with school students in South Reading. It motivated and enabled me to have a voice for people of my age to help them choose and reach their own aspirations. Being a young researcher was an amazing opportunity as nowadays teenagers\u2019 opinions are discarded due to our age. Therefore, I\u2019m happy as I was able to be part of a group that contributed to making a change in Whitley.\u201d \u2014<\/em>\u00a0<b>Kalvin, Young Whitley Researcher<\/b>[\/vc_cta][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221; color=&#8221;juicy-pink&#8221;]<em>\u201cHow effective would it be to put a group of children in charge, to make the greater change, to inspire a movement, to push towards a better Whitley? As a young researcher I know I am the future \u2013 working together, working for you.&#8221; \u2014<\/em>\u00a0<b>Christina, Young Whitley Researcher<\/b>[\/vc_cta][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221;]<em>\u201cWorking in collaboration with the University of Reading has been hugely rewarding for the John Madejski Academy Young Researchers. It has been a delight to see how much engagement and enthusiasm the students have invested in working on a project based around their community. This will no doubt provide useful and tangible evidence for countless stakeholders and inspire those involved to continue their research journey through to University and beyond\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 \u2014 <strong>Laura Ellener, former Headteacher<\/strong>[\/vc_cta][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221;]<em>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to believe that they are still only 14 and that they would not have been confident enough a year ago to even consider hosting the kinds of events they do now. As well as this they have developed a clear understanding of their role in shaping their own and others\u2019 future through their individual and collective contributions. The research work undertaken has sparked an interest in them which means that I don\u2019t think the research focus will ever truly end. It is evolving and so are their concerns and aspirations. \u2026 The approach works because right from the start the focus has been about avoiding pre-conceived framing of what the issues are.\u201d<\/em> \u2014\u00a0<strong>Paul Allen, Head of Arts, John Madejski Academy<\/strong>[\/vc_cta][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221; color=&#8221;juicy-pink&#8221;]<em>\u201cI have really enjoyed my time as a young researcher. I have loved hearing people\u2019s different opinions and perspectives and showing that having a voice is extremely important: your opinion matters. The past couple of years have shown me that if you want change you need to be determined and fight for it. My main aim was to help young people have a voice and to always have an opinion no matter what age, race or gender.
