The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organisation for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted via 67 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft employs a staff of nearly 24,000, who work with an annual research budget totalling more than 2 billion euros.<\/p>\n

The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI, is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (Fraunhofer EMI) and studies high-speed processes in experiment and simulation from a physical and engineering perspective and develop solutions for industrial applications.\u00a0 Their centre of interest is on security, resilience, reliability, efficiency and sustainability of structures, systems and networks under dynamic and extraordinary loads, in particular comprising natural and man-made threats. An analysis of possible risks and weak (vulnerable) points in a technical system (e.g. for banking transactions) also with respect to cascading effects (input from the EU project SnowBALL)<\/p>\n

Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fraunhofer EMI leads a holistic simulation approach to analyse in what-if-scenarios the possible cyber-physical attacks and their impact on the whole system in order to detect cascading effects and to select appropriate counter and protecting measures; this will include an analysis of possible measures to protect the technological systems and in order to make them more resilient (input from the project RESILENS); also contributes to other aspects of the project such as requirements engineering, system integration and evaluation.<\/p>\n
