Hilda (Urlin) Petrie (1871 &#8211; 1957)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hilda (Urlin) Petrie had a long-standing interest in history and science from childhood. As a teenager, she took geology classes at King&#8217;s College Ladies Department. She modelled for noted Arts and Crafts artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/henry-holiday-23696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Holiday<\/a>&#8216;s painting <a href=\"https:\/\/artuk.org\/discover\/artworks\/aspasia-on-the-pnyx-123266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Aspasia on the Pnyx<\/em> <\/a>(1888), set in ancient Athens. Eight years later, Holiday introduced her to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/collections\/egypt\/collectionhistory\/petrie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Matthew Flinders Petrie<\/a>, an archaeologist and Professor of Egyptology at University College London (UCL hereafter).<\/p>\n<p>After her marriage to Petrie in 1897, Hilda spent nearly every winter on-site in Egypt (and later British Mandate Palestine) excavating alongside her husband and various students.
