Her father <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.readingmuseum.org.uk\/index.asp?page=record&amp;mwsquery=(%7Bsearch%7D=*%7Bhurry%7D)&amp;filename=REDMG&amp;hitsStart=13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arthur Hill<\/a> was a prominent Reading resident, a mayor and justice of the peace. Housing reform pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/features\/octavia-hill-her-life-and-legacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Octavia Hill<\/a> was her aunt. In 1892, when Gertrude was 32, she married fellow Reading resident and physician <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.readingmuseum.org.uk\/index.asp?page=record&amp;mwsquery=(%7Bsearch%7D=*%7Bhurry%7D)&amp;filename=REDMG&amp;hitsStart=14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamieson Hurry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurrys were involved in the early development of University College Reading, providing funding in 1913 to build a gymnasium, still extant on the University&#8217;s London Road campus.
