Brucciani & Co.<\/a> (before 1900)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This cast is of a capital<\/strong> that crowned a column of the Ionic order<\/strong> or style. The band of lotus and palmettes\u2014as found on the Erechtheion<\/strong><\/a> frieze [1<\/a>]\u2014sits below a repeating pattern of eggs and darts on one side and fig leaves and vines on the other. These suggest fertility, wealth and success: figs and eggs are traditional banquet foods of the ancient (and modern) Greeks. Similar column capitals were found on the Athenian Akropolis<\/strong><\/a>, from both the Erechtheion<\/strong> and the later Temple of Rome and Augustus. The inscription on the lower left side of the cast reads \u2018Rome\u2019, which might refer to the latter temple. The inscription preceding \u2018Rome\u2019, however, reads \u2018Poniatowski Va\u2019, which refers to the Villa Poniatowski, a large house in the Borghese Gardens, now part of the Villa Giulia Museum<\/a> in Rome. We know the original capital was displayed in the Villa from 1842 or earlier because of a watercolour<\/a> by Alfred Engelbach in that year entitled \u2018Ionic Capital, Villa Poniatowski, Rome\u2019. The capital from which this cast was made is still in the Borghese Gardens.<\/p>\n
