Cast of a head of a Lapith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(1920s) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-671 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/lapith-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/lapith-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/lapith.png 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This head is a cast that represents a <strong>Lapith<\/strong>\u2014 man from Thessaly, Greece\u2014engaged in a mythical battle with <strong>Centaurs<\/strong> at the marriage-feast of Peirithoos, king of the <strong>Lapiths<\/strong>. The original head on which this cast is based\u2014now in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theacropolismuseum.gr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acropolis Museum<\/a> (object number 699)\u2014 fell off one of the <strong>metopes<\/strong> that decorated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Parthenon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parthenon<\/a><strong>. <\/strong>The square element or metope to which this head belonged, South <strong>metope<\/strong> VI, is now in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Museum<\/a>, along with other <strong>metopes<\/strong> and decorations that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/ancient\/greeks\/parthenon_debate_01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lord Elgin<\/a> brought from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akropolis<\/a> <\/strong>to England from 1803.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-780\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-780 \" style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/semne-177x300.jpg\" alt=\"Semni Papaspyridi at Rhitsona, Greece, ca. 1921\" width=\"228\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/semne-177x300.jpg 177w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/semne.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Semni Papaspyridi at Rhitsona, Greece, ca. 1921<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The<strong> Lapith\u2019s<\/strong> head fell off before Elgin arrived in Athens and was found in the <strong>Akropolis<\/strong> excavations by the <a href=\"http:\/\/crete.classics.ox.ac.uk\/U2S4\/U2S4L2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greek Archaeological Service,<\/a> ca. 1920. <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/timeline-annie-dunman-hunt-ure-1893-1976-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annie<\/a> and Percy Ure were given this plaster cast by <a href=\"https:\/\/trowelblazers.com\/semni-karouzou-visible-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Semni Papaspyridi<\/a> (shown right) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namuseum.gr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Archaeological Museum of Athens<\/a>, September 1922, and Annie donated it to the Museum in 1967.
