She lived twenty-three years. M. Iulius Cethegus Phyllissam made this for his dearest wife\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/2064590\/CIL_VIII_19_Revisited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">translation<\/a> by Peter Krushwitz). This indication of a lifespan rather than precise birth and death dates is normal for ancient monuments. The text at the top of the stone, which is far larger and better spaced than the text at the bottom, emphasises the Roman part of the text, the woman\u2019s name, whereas the smaller text contains part of her husband\u2019s African name \u2014Phyllissam\u2014and his Roman names\u2014M. Iulus Cethegus\u2014on the line above. Although African people were integrating into Roman culture and society as citizens, they kept something of their native heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1816 and 1817 the Bey of Tripoli, Libya, gave the Prince Regent (later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/george-iv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George IV<\/a>) ruins from Lepcis Magna. King George IV later gave them to his architect,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalacademy.org.uk\/art-artists\/name\/jeffry-wyatville-ra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Jeffry Wyatville<\/a>, who used them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/collection\/2923207\/the-leptis-magna-ruins-virginia-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decorate the royal grounds<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk\/en\/experiences\/virginia-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virginia Water<\/a>, Surrey from 1824-30.\u00a0More than 130 years later, her Majesty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/her-majesty-the-queen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>, gifted this tombstone to the University of Reading when she launched the Faculty of Letters and Social Science (now Edith Morley Building) in 1957.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1022 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/BTU_logo-300x207.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/BTU_logo-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/Unorganized\/BTU_logo.png 686w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 145px) 100vw, 145px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/13-percy\/\"><strong>Click here<\/strong><\/a> for the next stop on our trail.<\/p>\n<p>This post is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/curiosi\/beyond-the-ure\/\">Beyond the Ure<\/a>, a sculpture trail around the Edith Morley Building at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(2nd century AD) The inscription on this tombstone from Leptis Magna (in modern Libya) remembers \u2018\u2018Domitia Rogata.
