{"id":432,"date":"2021-03-16T17:39:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T17:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/?p=432"},"modified":"2021-03-18T12:27:24","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T12:27:24","slug":"covid-test-instructions-using-line-illustrations-photographs-or-video-a-pilot-study-to-find-out-about-preference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/covid-test-instructions-using-line-illustrations-photographs-or-video-a-pilot-study-to-find-out-about-preference\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid test instructions using line illustrations, photographs or video: A pilot study to find out about preference"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>We compared different formats of user instructions for Covid Antibody testing using lateral flow tests, and gathered information about how people use different formats of instructions.<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>What we produced<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We produced three versions of instructions to explain procedural steps in carrying out a lateral flow test with fake blood.\u00a0The versions of instructions varied in the technique used to represent the action steps: a static version with\u00a0written text and illustrations, a static version with\u00a0written text and photographs, and a\u00a0video version with spoken text.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-434\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/178\/2021\/03\/examples-3-versions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1445\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/178\/2021\/03\/examples-3-versions.jpg 1445w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/178\/2021\/03\/examples-3-versions-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/178\/2021\/03\/examples-3-versions-1024x427.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/design-research-for-testing-diagnostics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/178\/2021\/03\/examples-3-versions-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1445px) 100vw, 1445px\" \/><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Remote sessions were conducted with 8 volunteers to see what they thought of the instructions: 4 women and 4 men, between 49 and 80 years old.\u00a0We asked them to read\/view the three versions and to rate the versions according to perceived easiness to the test, clarity of the instructions, and their anticipated confidence in performing this test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>Outcomes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Video instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Good to provide a procedural overview.<\/em>\u00a0Participants liked the video version because it provided an accessible overview of the procedure.<\/li>\n<li><em>Not practical to follow while doing the test.<\/em>\u00a0Participants said they would need a print version that allows them to go at their own pace, and to review their progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Photographs or line drawings<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>No clear preference for instructions with photographs or line drawings.<\/em>\u00a0Some participants thought that photographs were better at providing context, and that line illustrations enabled the depiction of detail more effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Inclusivity and access<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participants recognised that there may be preference for print instructions among older people, and that younger age groups may prefer online materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Difficult steps to carry out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants drew our attention to two procedural steps that were difficult to carry out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dispensing liquid using the dropper bottle<\/li>\n<li>Collecting liquid using a pipette<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This pilot study anticipates that both print and digital formats are needed, and that particular care is needed in relation to what are perceived as that challenging procedural steps.<\/p>\n<p><em>This pilot study was conducted between November 2020 and January 2021.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We compared different formats of user instructions for Covid Antibody testing using lateral flow tests, and gathered information about how people use different formats of instructions.
