WORDS without BORDERS, a website dedicated to promoting the translation of foreign language writing into English, recently posted a dispatch by author and translator Alison Anderson which highlights the relative lack of women authors whose works are translated into English. In ‘Where Are the Women in Translation’ Anderson posits various explanations for this phenomenon, wondering whether fewer women than men are published in their own language in some countries, but also whether unintentional gender biases are built into the selection processes of publishers and prize committees.
