SUMMARY:EVENT: Immersive Experiences in Research\, An ImmerseLab Training Day
DESCRIPTION:The IDRC DH is excited to offer free places on ‘Immersive Experiences in Research\, An ImmerseLab Training Day’\, which will take place on Thursday 5th November 2026\, 10:00 – 16:30.  in-person\, at the Minghella Studios.\n\n\nLed by immersive producer – and recent UoR Creative Entrepreneur in Residence – Tim Powell\, and organised and hosted by IDRC DH co-director\, Professor Lisa Purse\, in this training day we will explore how XR\, multisensory technologies\, digital worldbuilding and virtual production are opening up new possibilities for research\, creative practice and public engagement.\n\nThrough presentations\, case studies and collaborative sessions\, we’ll look beyond the technology to explore how immersive projects actually happen – from creative decisions\, skills and workflows to partnerships\, funding\, distribution and commercialisation.\n\nWe will also look at how you can integrate these elements into your research projects to create peer-reviewed\, REF-able outputs.\n\nWhether you’re bringing a specific research question\, developing a funded project\, exploring an ambitious idea with external partners\, or just simply curious\, the day will help you discover what ImmerseLab could enable in your own work – and how to increase greater impact and reach.\n\nNo specialist technical expertise is required. Come along to discover what’s possible and meet other researchers and external creatives working across disciplines and creative pathways.\n\nSchedule\n \n10:00 Introductions\n\n\n10:30 Immersive Storytelling 101\nWhat exactly is an immersive experience – and how is this ‘story-doing’ different from traditional storytelling? This session explores and defines the new possibilities\, focusing on the modes of immersion and the audience implications of embodiment\, presence\, and agency. Including a case study of The Gunpowder Plot immersive experience.\n\n11:40 Break \n\n\n12:00 New Ways of Working: Immersive Technologies\, Digital Worldbuilding and the Virtual Production Ecosystem \nWe will start by looking at the technology toolkit at your disposal. What immersive\, multi-sensory options are there and how can they be combined? How to focus on unique affordances that are genuinely new\, through the ‘superpowers’ framework. We will then look at Worldbuilding as a methodology for immersive storytelling across platforms and the new  ‘virtual production’ ecosystem transforming the creative industries.\n\n12:50 Lunch \n\n\n13:30 New Ways of Working: Workflows\, Skillsets and Team Structures \nImmersive projects often require people to work differently\, blending creative\, technical\, academic and production disciplines in new ways. This session explores the practical realities of delivering interdisciplinary work: agile workflows\, prototyping\, iterative development\, clear roles\, effective handovers and team structures.\n\n14:45 Break \n\n\n15:00 Funding\, Distribution and Commercialisation \nThe history of immersive arts has often been defined by inspirational projects that struggle to reach significant or mainstream audiences – with the market now dominated by corporate LBEs and cynical IP adaptations. This session will explore how landmark projects secured investment and partnerships to create and operate new types of experience\, focusing on commercialisation factors that can be embedded in the creative process to increase impact and reach.\n\n15:30 Planning your Next Steps \n\n\n16:00 Conclusions\n\n\nApply now!\n\nPlaces are limited\, so to apply for a place on the training day\, please complete the form at this link by Friday\, 23rd October\, 5pm. Chosen attendees will be notified of their place by 29th October at the latest\, so feel free to put a hold on your calendars for now.

SUMMARY:ONLINE WEBINAR: Introduction to Databases and Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Humanities researchers often work with rich collections of sources\, but may not think of them as “data”. This introductory webinar explores how databases and data science approaches can help you organise\, manage\, analyse\, and gain new insights from your research materials. \nLed by Abbie Tibbott and Dr Alan Guedes\, the session will introduce key concepts\, including what data is\, how to structure information\, and the role databases play in supporting effective research. \nNo prior experience or knowledge necessary. The IDRC DH and DH Hub warmly invite researchers\, professional services staff\, and PhD students to this introductory session. The presentation will last just under an hour\, with opportunities for questions at the end if attendees wish to stay. \nThis session is the first of three data science offerings led by Dr Alan Guedes\, co-director of the IDRC DH\, and lecturer in computer science. The next 2 workshops will be hands-on and interactive. We will share more details during the webinar. \nPlease register for the event here

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Database Design: the Practicalities
DESCRIPTION:Location TBC \nThis hands-on workshop will introduce practical database design principles and help participants transform research information into a clear\, structured database. Led by IDRC DH co-director Dr Alan Guedes\, with help from Computer Science students\, staff can learn more about database design at the University of Reading. \n\nUsing an ICT suite\, participants will learn to identify entities\, define fields\, create relationships between data\, and avoid common design mistakes. Through guided exercises and real-world examples\, attendees will build a simple database schema and apply database design concepts to their own research projects. \nThis workshop is ideal for researchers planning to create a database\, manage structured information\, or prepare data for further analysis using digital humanities or data science methods. If you attended our online webinar\, this workshop is an ideal follow-on\, but you don’t need to have attended. \nThis workshop suits researchers and postgraduate students with little or no prior experience in database design. The session is a structured yet relaxed environment with plenty of 1-1 help and opportunities for experimentation. \nTo register\, please fill in this form to confirm your place by Wednesday\, 10th February. Places are not limited\, but we ask people to register so that we have an idea of numbers. We will send final invites after the 20th.
