SUMMARY:Back to Campus Event
DESCRIPTION:The IDRC DH and DH Hub are hosting a back-to-campus event on Wednesday 11th November\, from 13:00–14:30\, in Palmer 105\, in person. This event has run successfully in the past and will be hosted this year by DH Officer Abbie Tibbott. \nColleagues are warmly invited to attend to socialise\, get inspired about internal funding opportunities\, and learn about our events for the 2026-27 academic year. The schedule is as follows: \nAgenda \n13:00 – 13:15 Tea and coffee refreshments (remember to bring your own cup!) \n13:15 – 13:30 Welcome and our events for 2026-27 \n13:30 – 14:00 Hear from Professor Anne Lawrence-Mathers\, Professor Teresa Murjas and Dr Michelle Tomlinson\, who were each awarded pilot and seed funding to work on digital humanities projects of their choosing in 2025 and 2026. Our researchers will deliver short presentations on their projects\, including what they learnt\, the impact and the process. \n14:00 – 14:20 Information about the Joint Fellowship being piloted between the IDRC DH and Special Collections\, key reminders about support available\, and the opportunity for questions. \nThe room is booked until 15:00\, so colleagues are welcome to stay\, chat\, and ask further questions.

SUMMARY:ONLINE WEBINAR: Introduction to Databases and Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Humanities researchers often work with rich collections of sources\, but may not think of them as “data”. This introductory webinar explores how databases and data science approaches can help you organise\, manage\, analyse\, and gain new insights from your research materials. \nLed by Abbie Tibbott and Dr Alan Guedes\, the session will introduce key concepts\, including what data is\, how to structure information\, and the role databases play in supporting effective research. \nNo prior experience or knowledge necessary. The IDRC DH and DH Hub warmly invite researchers\, professional services staff\, and PhD students to this introductory session. The presentation will last just under an hour\, with opportunities for questions at the end if attendees wish to stay. \nThis session is the first of three data science offerings led by Dr Alan Guedes\, co-director of the IDRC DH\, and lecturer in computer science. The next 2 workshops will be hands-on and interactive. We will share more details during the webinar. \nPlease register for the event here

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Database Design: the Practicalities
DESCRIPTION:Location TBC \nThis hands-on workshop will introduce practical database design principles and help participants transform research information into a clear\, structured database. Led by IDRC DH co-director Dr Alan Guedes\, with help from Computer Science students\, staff can learn more about database design at the University of Reading. \n\nUsing an ICT suite\, participants will learn to identify entities\, define fields\, create relationships between data\, and avoid common design mistakes. Through guided exercises and real-world examples\, attendees will build a simple database schema and apply database design concepts to their own research projects. \nThis workshop is ideal for researchers planning to create a database\, manage structured information\, or prepare data for further analysis using digital humanities or data science methods. If you attended our online webinar\, this workshop is an ideal follow-on\, but you don’t need to have attended. \nThis workshop suits researchers and postgraduate students with little or no prior experience in database design. The session is a structured yet relaxed environment with plenty of 1-1 help and opportunities for experimentation. \nTo register\, please fill in this form to confirm your place by Wednesday\, 10th February. Places are not limited\, but we ask people to register so that we have an idea of numbers. We will send final invites after the 20th.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Python for Database Design
DESCRIPTION:Location TBC \nThis hands-on workshop introduces researchers to the use of Python for creating\, managing\, and interacting with databases\, providing a practical foundation for more efficient and scalable research workflows. Led by Dr Alan Guedes and supported by Computer Science students\, we invite anyone curious about what Python and other query languages can do for research to attend. \nWorking in an ICT suite\, participants will learn how Python can be used to create database structures\, add and update records\, query information\, and automate repetitive data management tasks. Through guided exercises\, attendees will work with a simple relational database and gain experience writing and adapting Python code to interact with research data. \n\nNo prior programming experience is required. The workshop offers a practical introduction for researchers who want to build technical skills in managing structured data\, supporting digital humanities projects\, or preparing data for analysis. \n\nTo register\, please fill in this form to confirm your place by Wednesday\, 12th May. Places are not limited\, but we ask people to register so we have a sense of numbers. We will send final invites after the 12th.
