SUMMARY:(Generative) Artificial Intelligence and Teaching the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:Edward Ross and Jackie Baines (Department of Classics) invite teachers\, researchers\, scholars\, and practitioners to participate in a new\, hybrid conference event exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and teaching about the ancient world\, broadly conceived. From the exponential environmental impact to the distortion of ancient history to the development of new models\, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools are making growing impacts on how the ancient world is taught\, investigated\, perceived\, and understood. It is crucial to discuss these arising issues with those involved at all stages of the teaching\, research\, and development processes so that the many disciplines engaged in ancient world studies might have a consensus about the use\, ethics\, and impact of GenAI. \nKeynote Address: Environmentally (un)sustainable AI: rethinking responsibilities for Ancient World Studies? by Prof. Federica Lucivero (Ethox Centre\, University of Oxford) \nSpeakers include teachers\, researchers\, and practitioners from eight countries. DESCRIPTION:The IDRC DH and DH Hub are hosting a back-to-campus event on Wednesday 11th November\, from 13:00–14:30\, in Palmer 105\, in person. This event has run successfully in the past and will be hosted this year by DH Officer Abbie Tibbott. \nColleagues are warmly invited to attend to socialise\, get inspired about internal funding opportunities\, and learn about our events for the 2026-27 academic year. The schedule is as follows: \nAgenda \n13:00 – 13:15 Tea and coffee refreshments (remember to bring your own cup!) \n13:15 – 13:30 Welcome and our events for 2026-27 \n13:30 – 14:00 Hear from Professor Anne Lawrence-Mathers\, Professor Teresa Murjas and Dr Michelle Tomlinson\, who were each awarded pilot and seed funding to work on digital humanities projects of their choosing in 2025 and 2026. Our researchers will deliver short presentations on their projects\, including what they learnt\, the impact and the process. \n14:00 – 14:20 Information about the Joint Fellowship being piloted between the IDRC DH and Special Collections\, key reminders about support available\, and the opportunity for questions. \nThe room is booked until 15:00\, so colleagues are welcome to stay\, chat\, and ask further questions.
