SUMMARY:3rd Reading Football Economics Conference AND 7th Sport Economics Sport Management Conference
DESCRIPTION:On May 7-8 2024 the Department of Economics at the University of Reading will host the 3rd Reading Football Economics Conference (RFEC) and the 7th Sport Economics Sport Management (SESM) International Conference in conjunction with the International Association of Sports Economists (https://www.iase-sport.org) concurrently. This event is generously sponsored by the Sports Economics Review\, published by Elsevier\, and the keynote speakers for the event will be Prof Colin Camerer\, of the California Institute of Technology\, and Prof Paul Downward of Loughborough University. \nThese two concurrent events taking place at the University of Reading will allow scholars in a range of fields to present their in-progress research to a wide audience of participants. The RFEC conference\, in its third year\, brings together researchers who have used the setting of football (however defined) for their work in the broadly defined area of economics. The SESM conference attracts researchers considering all sports\, across the fields of economics and management\, to present their work. \nThe schedule is now finalised for the conference in Reading. Please find it here. \nPlease register for the conference here by April 30. There is a small fee of £25.95 for the conference dinner at Bill’s Restaurant in central Reading. \nHotels in Reading are generally reasonably priced and within easy reach of campus either by walking (about two miles\, 30 minutes)\, or via the 21 bus (which runs regularly from close to the railway station). Particular hotels: \n\nPremier Inn Central (currently showing as £65 per night).\nTravelodge Reading Central (currently showing as £47 per night).\nIbis Reading Centre (currently showing as £64 per night).\nPenta Hotel (currently showing as £99 per night).\n\nIn addition to the 3RFEC/7SESM there will be: \nMay 10-11: 18th Gijon Conference on Sport Economics\, Gijon\, Spain. \n\nSubmission deadline: April 1. Please send an abstract of about 200 words to: placido@uniovi.es and foedplacido@gmail.com\nThis year the topic of the Conference is Sports Governance Bodies. New Competitions (In Season NBA\, for instance). New Sports. Fight-Fight for the calendar: FIFA\, UEFA\, Clubs\, IOC. Role of new investors: Arabs in soccer and golf (Ronaldo and Rahm\, for example). Injuries due to tight schedules\, European Super League judgment and so on.\n\nMay 13-14: 8th Football and Finance Conference\, University of Duisburg-Essen\, Duisburg\, Germany. \n\nThe conference is dedicated to topics related to the economics of football\, with a full two-day schedule.\nThere is a pre-conference “come together” at 7pm on May 12 for those able to make it at Currybar at Citypalais close to hotels and train station.\nPlease register by sending an email to sekretariat.prinz@uni-due.de by the end of April. The conference fee is €50 and includes snacks and coffee breaks. DESCRIPTION:Our 10th GEAR Quarterly Lecture will be held on 9 May 2024 2:00-3:30 pm in Edith Morley 126J and our speaker is Professor Jennifer Castle\, University of Oxford (details to be circulated). As usual\, the lecture will be synchronously recorded and available for viewing ex-post from the University of Reading’s Research YouTube channel. \nIt is possible to join via MS Teams – but do try to come in person. Right after the lecture everyone is invited to a drinks reception from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in EM 126J.
