It investigates, using the National Pupil Database, how school closures in England impact pupils\u2019 academic attainment, attendance, and behaviour, considering demographic and socioeconomic factors.<\/p>\n<p>The project addresses the following questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How do school closures affect displaced pupils\u2019 academic attainment, attendance\/ absenteeism, and in-school behaviours?<\/li>\n<li>How are pupils in \u2018receiving\u2019 schools affected by the arrival of those displaced by closures?<\/li>\n<li>How does the effect of closures vary by pupils\u2019 education stage or age at closure?<\/li>\n<li>How does the effect of closures differ by prior attainment, socioeconomic, gender, and ethnic background?<\/li>\n<li>What are the mechanisms driving the effects of school closures?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The project will help policy makers better understand how to mitigate negative impacts and maximise benefits of school closures, enhancing educational equity and resource allocation. Dissemination activities include policy briefs, practitioner guidance, workshops, and webinars.<\/p>\n<p>You can find out more about the project on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/project\/the-effects-of-permanent-school-closures-on-pupils-outcomes\">Nuffield Foundation project&#8217;s webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Maternal Wellbeing, Infant Feeding and Return to Paid Work<br \/>\n<\/strong>2022 \u2013 2025<br \/>\nFunded by the Nuffield Foundation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The cross-disciplinary project (drawing on economics, law and applied linguistics) was led by <a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/sarah-jewell\">Professor Sarah Jewell,<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">\u00a0with co-investigators of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/samantha-rawlings\">Dr Sam Rawlings<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"http:\/\/mardelgiu.com\/\">Professor Marina Della Giusta<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/law\/our-staff\/grace-james\">Professor Grace James<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/elal\/staff\/dr-sylvia-jaworska\">Professor Sylvia Jaworska\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drfariaftab.com\/\">Dr Fari Aftab.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The project aimed to understand how breastfeeding employees could be better supported in the workplace, with an emphasis on maternal wellbeing, and how employers can be better equipped to support their employees. The study drew on a survey and interviews of mothers, the perspective of HR professionals and Line managers, and national datasets. The study found that whilst there are general positive intentions among HR professionals and line managers, there is a lack of awareness in many workplaces of what is needed to support breastfeeding employees \u2013 both in terms of the legal obligations and practicalities.\u00a0 The current legal framework and guidance is not strong enough to ensure mothers can breastfeed\/express breastmilk in hygienic and private places in the workplace or have the time to do so, thereby putting women\u2019s physical and emotional wellbeing at risk.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about the project\u2019s findings and implications in the <a href=\"https:\/\/centaur.reading.ac.uk\/123480\/\">project report<\/a>. The project developed a freely available toolkits to support breastfeeding and return to work for <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/workfeed\/for-organisations\/\">organisations<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/workfeed\/for-parents\/\"> mothers.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Generation Delta: Nurturing the next generation of BAME women professors<br \/>\n<\/strong>2021 \u2013 2025<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">Funded by the Office for Students\/UK Research and Innovation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/uma-kambhampati\">Professor Uma Kambhampati<\/a> is part of a consortium of 6 universities working on a project \u2013 Generation Delta &#8211; to improve the access and retention of home BAME women in academia. This project is one of 13 projects funded by Research England and the Office for Students and is at the mid-way point (2022-2026). Generation Delta involves six institutions: University of Leeds; Goldsmiths; Plymouth; Reading; Sheffield and Sunderland and received funding of \u00a3797,264 .<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to address the institutional and individual barriers experienced by Black, Asian and minority ethnic women at different stages of the PGR life cycle \u2013 access and admissions, retention and progression within the programme and career development following doctoral studies. It is hoped that the work done within this project will lay the foundations for a long-term increase in the number of Black, Asian and minority women gaining professorships in higher education institutions in England. The programme has three components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Programme of roundtables for staff, designed to embed more equitable practice in the PGR life cycle<\/li>\n<li>Programme of workshops for students on how to navigate Higher Education.<\/li>\n<li>The creation of a new PGR Student Network for BAME women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please see more information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/generationdelta.leeds.ac.uk\/\">project website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>IN-HABIT &#8211; INclusive Health And wellBeing In small and medium size ciTies<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">2020 \u2013 2025<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Funded by EU Horizon 2020<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>IN-HABIT is a EU Horizon 2020 funded consortium that aims to identify visionary and integrated solutions to promote inclusive health and wellbeing in small and medium size cities. In each of the four pilot cities, Corodba, Lucca, Riga and Nitra the project investigates how the mobilisation of existing undervalued resources, such as culture and heritage, food, human-animal bonds and art and environment might contribute to boost health and wellbeing, with a focus on gender, diversity, equity and inclusion. The integrated approach combines technological, digital, nature-based, cultural, and social innovations in selected urban public spaces. These solutions are co-designed, co-deployed and co-managed with local inhabitants and stakeholders. The project will be implemented during a five-year period (2020-2025) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/marina-della-giusta\">Marina Della Giusta<\/a> is leading the Work Package on Behaviour Change with a focus on Gender and Diversity. The University of Reading team includes also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/giovanni-razzu\">Giovanni Razzu<\/a>, Florent Dubois, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/sophie-clot\">Sophie Clot<\/a> in Economics and Rachel McCloy, Helen Dodd and Shannon Wake in Psychology as well as Maria Laura Di Tommaso at the University of Turin.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inhabit-h2020.eu\/\">project website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>&#8220;Railway Imperialism&#8221; in the Global South in the First Period of Globalisation: Lessons from History<br \/>\n<\/strong>2020 \u2013 2023<br \/>\nFunded by the British Academy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project, by <strong>Dr Andrew Primmer, <\/strong><strong>British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Economics, <\/strong>focusses on the development of railway imperialism in the global south through six case studies of individual British railway companies operating in Latin America and Africa. These case studies analyse the financial performance, business strategy and ownership structure of individual railway companies in order to evaluate how profitable \u201crailway imperialism\u201d was in of itself for British investors, how it operated, and who controlled it. Company shareholding records are used to ascertain the dominant interests and linkages with other secondary economic activities supported by the railways. This addresses four major concerns which have not been adequately answered by the existing historiography: who controlled \u201crailway imperialism\u201d? how profitable it was? How did it operate on an individual basis? And, what were the principle motivations for its establishment?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>What New Skills Will Graduates Require in the Future?<br \/>\n<\/strong>September 2020 \u2013 August 2023<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Employability Programme Development (EPD), funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The labour market for graduates is constantly evolving and job applicants are often expected to have new types of academic and non-academic skills.\u00a0 How can universities ensure their students acquire the most sought-after new skills that will make them most successful in their jobs?\u00a0 Simonetta Longhi and Sarah Jewell\u00a0 obtained funding from the EU for a new Erasmus+ project which aimed at establishing a labour market to higher education feedback loop that will help universities to keep up to date with the new skill requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The project, was led by the University of Glasgow and key findings and outputs can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/research\/az\/epd\/\">project website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Wage and Employment Dynamics in Britain (Stage 1 and 2)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">October 2019 <span style=\"color: #993300\">\u2013 <\/span>September 2022<br \/>\nFunded by Administrative Data Research UK and Economic and Social Research Council<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlsingletoneconomics.com\/\">Carl Singleton<\/a> is working with researchers at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwe.ac.uk\/\">University of the West of England (UWE)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/\">University College London (UCL)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.city.ac.uk\/\">City, University of London<\/a>, University of Birmingham,\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niesr.ac.uk\/\">National Institute of Economic and Social Research\u00a0(NIESR)<\/a>\u00a0on, an administrative data linkage and research project which aims to provide important new insights into the dynamics of earnings and employment in\u00a0Britain. This project is expected to increase understanding of how people\u2019s wages progress through their career, factoring in key characteristics such as gender and ethnicity, as well as the dynamics of low-pay labour markets.<\/p>\n<p>This project has the potential to transform our understanding of wage and employment issues from labour market entry, through job mobility and career progression to retirement decisions.\u00a0The insights provided by the project could be key to informing responses to crucial policy challenges facing the UK, such as reducing in-work poverty and systemic inequalities within the labour market, such as the gender pay gap.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagedynamics.com\/\">Wage &amp; Employment Dynamics\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0to stay up to date with this project<strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Relative Poverty and Decision Making: Investigating the Impact of the Incentivised Conservation Programme<br \/>\n<\/strong>September 2020 \u2013 August 2022<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">ESRC New Investigator Grant<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recent evidence suggests that the psychological impact of being poor exacerbates a poverty trap mechanism. Farmers in developing countries are exposed to stress that affects their decisions over time. It increases their discount rate and their propensity to behave in a manner consistent with hyperbolic discounting, that is, overweighting immediate outcomes. In parallel to the effect of absolute poverty, additional findings demonstrate the aggravating role of relative poverty (unbalanced cash flows over a calendar year).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/sophie-clot\">Sophie Clot<\/a> has been awarded a ESRC New Investigator Grant to analyse how relative poverty affects decision-making in developing countries, where conservation programmes are used to encourage behaviour change amongst farmers. \u00a0The project will test two main hypotheses: 1) Relative poverty impacts farmers&#8217; risk, time and social preferences; 2) Rewards (such as those offered to promote alternative activities) are more likely to translate into stress-biased decisions, worsening farmer&#8217;s prospects for long-term sustained improvements in well-being, when occurring in a context of relatively higher poverty.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/gtr.ukri.org\/projects?ref=ES%2FT001267%2F1\">project website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Understanding Post-Emancipation Indentured Labour Migration from Indian Subcontinent to the Caribbean<br \/>\n<\/strong>January 2018 \u2013 June 2021<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Historical literature suggests that the 19th Century post slavery indentured labour migration was a significant contributor to the development of global capitalism. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/neha-hui\">Neha Hui<\/a> has obtained funding from the British Academy to analyse different aspects of this migration including macro-level policy discourse across three continents as well as micro-level employment and migration decision making.<\/p>\n<p>This form of migration came about when the discourse of economic freedom and individual liberty strongly resonated in British political-economy circles, following the work of Smith and Mill. This project analyses how unfreedom in indentured labour was rationalised when the rhetoric of freedom was essential to the dominant intellectual milieu. Equally, most of the workers faced unfreedom in the form of caste hierarchies in their home countries. Did the workers trade-off social unfreedom in the form of caste system for labour market unfreedom? This project looks at archival data to answer these questions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Other Recent Smaller Projects<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/dr-diya-abraham\">Diya Abraham<\/a> received a grant of \u00a39900 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/funding\/ba-leverhulme-small-research-grants\/\">BA\/Leverhulme Small Research Grant<\/a>\u00a0scheme to investigate when and why employees fail to correct to correct their supervisors. The project entitled, &#8220;Upstream corrections and team performance&#8221; involves the use of tightly controlled laboratory experiments to study the causal mechanisms behind employee under-correction and how to mitigate it. The eventual aim is to provide recommendations for practitioners in industry to encourage more open dialogue in organizations and improve employee well-being as well as performance in work-teams. The project will run from July 2024 to the end of June 2026.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/stefania-lovo\">Stefania Lovo<\/a> is working with Albert Chongo on a project funded by The International Growth Centre (IGC) to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) in Zambia, focusing on its impact on agricultural productivity, and climate resilience. The study will provide critical insights for policymakers, helping to optimize resource allocation and improve the efficiency of FISP. It will feature a central dissemination event in Zambia to share the findings with key stakeholders including government agencies, development organisations and private sector representatives. The project will run from March 2025 to the end of September 2026.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/shixuan-wang\">Shixuan Wang<\/a> is working with Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT) on a project of <span style=\"color: #993300\">Improving Staff Retention at the RBFT: Econometric Data Analytics, Probabilistic Forecasting and Management Intelligence<\/span>. The team seeks to reform the Trust\u2019s approach to staff retention at the RBFT. They will research, test and deliver a solution that enables them to model and predict the likelihood of colleagues leaving the Trust in the future. Through the project, the team aims to create interventions to support workforce retention. This project is funded by <span style=\"color: #993300\">Collaborative Innovation Fund (2024-2025)<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/florentduboiseco\/home\">Florent Dubois<\/a> has been successful to be awarded a <span style=\"color: #800000\">PHC Protea<\/span> grant. PHC Protea stands for <span style=\"color: #800000\">Partenariat<\/span> (i.e., partnership) <span style=\"color: #800000\">Hubert Curien<\/span>, a tool used by the <span style=\"color: #800000\">French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs for bilateral scientific exchange with South Africa<\/span>.\u00a0 Florent\u2019s project studies gender-based violence in South Africa. It will look at the effect of women&#8217;s labour market opportunities relative to men&#8217;s and on intimate partner violence, before concentrating on the intergenerational effects of violence.\u00a0 Besides Florent, the research team includes Miracle Benhura (University of the Witwatersrand), Eliane El Badaoui (University Paris-Nanterre), Prudence Magejo (University of the Witwatersrand), and Laurine Martinoty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/marina-della-giusta\">Marina Della Giusta<\/a> is working for <span style=\"color: #800000\">Pearson Publishing<\/span> on a project on <a href=\"https:\/\/cubeprogramme.com\/\">Contrasting Unconscious Bias in Education (CUBE)<\/a>.\u00a0 This project consists of the design, implementation and evaluation via randomised control trial of a programme for combating unconscious bias in primary schools. The intervention is conducted with trainers from Pearson in primary schools and the team includes also Florent Dubois and Pietro Biroli at the University of Bologna.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/steven-bosworth\">Steven Bosworth<\/a> worked on a project on <span style=\"color: #800000\">Rebuilding Macroeconomics \u2013 Firm Structure and Political Economy Consequences<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #800000\">funded by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (July 2019-October 2020)<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/marina-della-giusta\">Marina Della Giusta<\/a> worked on a project on Rebuilding Macroeconomics \u2013 Assessing the Impact of REF on Academic Macroeconomics, funded by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research on a project (January 2020-July 2020).<\/li>\n<li>Geoff Meen worked on a project on <span style=\"color: #800000\">Modelling Housing Markets: Developments and Extensions to the MHCLG Housing Simulation Model<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #800000\">funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities &amp; Local Government (October 2019-December 2019)<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/marina-della-giusta\">Marina Della Giusta<\/a> worked on a project to investigate how <span style=\"color: #800000\">cash transfers to self-help (savings) groups in Ethiopia<\/span> during a crisis affects the resilience of these groups and relationships within the community.\u00a0 The project was <span style=\"color: #800000\">funded by Tearfund (March 2017-June 2017)<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/economics\/our-staff\/sarah-jewell\">Sarah Jewell<\/a> worked on a project <span style=\"color: #800000\">funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Projects<\/span>: <a title=\"http:\/\/www.creative-graduates.org.uk\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.creative-graduates.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;So What Do You Do?
