On Thursday 15th November 2018, two of the recently graduated PhD students at the Institute of Education were invited to share their research with current doctoral students, IoE staff and\u00a0Professor Adrian Bell<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(the new Dean of the University\u2019s\u00a0Prosperity & Resilience (P&R) research theme<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Dr. Pengchong (Anthony) Zhang<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The title of Anthony’s PhD thesis is Comparing different types of EFL vocabulary instruction for Chinese high school learners of English<\/em>. His study explored\u00a0the teaching and learning of vocabulary through listening among Chinese high-school learners of English. He used a quasi-experimental mixed-method design in a classroom intervention comparing incidental vocabulary learning through listening with different types of vocabulary instruction.<\/p>\n

Anthony currently works as a Teaching Fellow in Education at the University of Reading\u2019s Institute of Education. In this role, he leads and teaches postgraduate-level modules as well as supervise MA dissertations. His career aspiration is to become a leading scholar in his research field of second language education.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jie\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Liu\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The title of Jie’s PhD thesis is Trilingual education of Chinese university minority students in China: A case study<\/em>. Her PhD set out to study the language education of Chinese minority groups in China. In particular, she explored the experiences of staff and minority students in a trilingual educational programme (home language, Mandarin Chinese and English) at tertiary level.<\/p>\n

Currently, Jie also works as a Teaching Fellow in Education at\u00a0the University of Reading\u2019s Institute of Education. She hopes to develop her capacity for academic teaching and research on the post, and collaborate with colleagues within a wider network to explore shared areas of interest, such as multilingualism, multilingual education and language policies.<\/span><\/p>\n
