{"id":1257,"date":"2018-11-15T00:46:57","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T00:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/?p=1257"},"modified":"2022-09-20T11:17:48","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T10:17:48","slug":"news-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/2018\/11\/15\/news-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS &#8211; Research presentations by two recently graduated IoE doctoral students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday 15th November 2018, two of the recently graduated PhD students at the Institute of Education were invited to share their research with current doctoral students, IoE staff and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmacentre.ac.uk\/people\/professor-adrian-bell\/\"><strong>Professor Adrian Bell<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(the new Dean of the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/research\/themes\/theme-prosperity-resilience.aspx\"><strong>Prosperity &amp; Resilience (P&amp;R) research theme<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><em><strong>Dr. Pengchong (Anthony) Zhang<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1258\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6324-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6324-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6324-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6324-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6324.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The title of Anthony&#8217;s PhD thesis is<em> Comparing different types of EFL vocabulary instruction for Chinese high school learners of English<\/em>. His study explored\u00a0the teaching and learning of vocabulary through listening among Chinese high-school learners of English. He used a quasi-experimental mixed-method design in a classroom intervention comparing incidental vocabulary learning through listening with different types of vocabulary instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony currently works as a Teaching Fellow in Education at the University of Reading\u2019s Institute of Education. In this role, he leads and teaches postgraduate-level modules as well as supervise MA dissertations. His career aspiration is to become a leading scholar in his research field of second language education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Dr. Jie\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Liu\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1259\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6328-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6328-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6328-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6328-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/IMG_6328.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The title of Jie&#8217;s PhD thesis is <em>Trilingual education of Chinese university minority students in China: A case study<\/em>. Her PhD set out to study the language education of Chinese minority groups in China. In particular, she explored the experiences of staff and minority students in a trilingual educational programme (home language, Mandarin Chinese and English) at tertiary level.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Currently, Jie also works as a Teaching Fellow in Education at\u00a0the University of Reading\u2019s Institute of Education.
