This article can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10643-019-00937-5\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>The article presents the results of an empirical study, focusing on the construction of a precursor model that can support children\u2019s scientific learning, in relation to the phenomenon of change of the state of water. The research, conducted in Greece, included 91 children aged 5\u20136 whom participated in a specifically-designed teaching intervention. The article explains that &#8220;The intervention lasted approximately 55 min and was conducted at eight stages, during which children\u2019s predictions and explanations for simple cases of change of the state of water were recorded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1715 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/maria.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/maria.png 627w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/maria-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kambouri-Danos said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe findings provide further evidence for calls to rebalance early year curricula to teach a broader range of topics including \u2018science\u2019 in a way that gets to grips with concepts rather than just information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith misconceptions about science sometimes developed at an early age, it\u2019s also critical to look at ensuring that we\u2019re not placing barriers in the way of children\u2019s enjoyment of learning science by introducing fundamental concepts at an earlier age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a point where there are increasing calls for more people going into STEM careers, we need to ensure that we aren\u2019t underestimating the ability of younger children to grapple with scientific concepts.
