On Thursday 16 May 2019, we were pleased to hear research updates from two of our staff members: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/c-l-fuller.aspx\"><strong>Prof. Carol Fuller (Professor of Sociology of Education) <\/strong><\/a>and<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/r-j-harris.aspx\"> Dr. Rebecca Harris (Associate Professor of History Education)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1783 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0656-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0656-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0656-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0656-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0656.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In her presentation, titled<strong><em> \u2018Martial arts and well-being: Understanding practice and its role in the construction of beliefs\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, Prof. Fuller talked about her research which primarily sets out to address how and in what way can martial arts be considered as contributing to health and well-being from the perspective of those that practice them. Using survey data from 515 survey participants from within the UK and abroad as well as interview data from a sub-sample of 40 participants via phone, Skype, Facetime and e-mail, Dr. Fuller found that participating in martial arts has had a profound influence on lifestyle and health from the perspective of those that practice them. Prof. Fuller argued that \u201cRegardless of whether perceived improvements are \u2018true\u2019 in a medical sense, beliefs shape practice, which creates outcomes that then reinforce beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1784 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0673-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0673-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0673-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0673-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/Unorganized\/IMG_0673.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In her presentation, titled <strong><em>&#8216;Teachers&#8217; curriculum decision making in an accountability culture: A view from the world of History teachers&#8217;<\/em><\/strong>, Dr. Harris shared findings from her collaborative research project which focuses on teachers\u2019 decision making in relation to purpose of teaching History, choice of exam board, curriculum choices, pedagogy, and assessment. Using interview data collected from nine History teachers in England. Dr. Harris found that teachers largely adopt \u2018low risk\u2019 approaches in the face of high stakes changes. She argued \u201cAccountability measures, against which teachers are judged, act as a constraint on the risks teachers are willing to take\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This seminar event was very well attended by both research staff and doctoral students at the Institute.
