{"id":1833,"date":"2019-05-14T09:06:45","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T08:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/?p=1833"},"modified":"2025-03-04T14:26:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T14:26:31","slug":"news-research-by-prof-suzanne-graham-professor-of-language-and-education-got-reported-in-the-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/2019\/05\/14\/news-research-by-prof-suzanne-graham-professor-of-language-and-education-got-reported-in-the-media\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS &#8211; Research by Prof. Suzanne Graham (Professor of Language and Education) got reported in the media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research on modern language teaching by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/s-j-graham.aspx\"><strong>Prof. Suzanne Graham<\/strong><\/a> (Professor of Language and Education) got reported in the media this week. <span lang=\"EN-US\">In a Guardian article <em>(<\/em><strong><em>&#8216;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2019\/may\/11\/language-exams-how-hard-are-they-and-is-there-a-crisis\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em><strong>Language exams: how hard are they and is there a crisis?&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>), Prof. Graham concluded from her research that even though many students believe it is important to learn another language, they choose not to take language GCSEs because they are difficult.<\/p>\n<p>In a related Guardian article, titled <em>&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2019\/may\/11\/modern-language-teaching-under-threat-from-tough-exams\"><strong>Modern language teaching \u2018under threat from tough exams\u2019&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, which highlights the excessive difficulty of language GCSE and A-level exams, Prof. Graham commented that the exams are increasingly becoming elite subjects.
