The purpose of this article is to report on a longitudinal study which explored the perceptions and experiences of part-time doctoral students using an empirically based development framework (the Researching Professional Development Framework) as they progressed through the first year of their EdD programme at a research-led English University. This paper draws on data from a British Academy\/Leverhulme funded research project investigating how governing boards in geographically dispersed Multi Academy Trusts involve stakeholders within strategic decision-making processes. It draws on 30 interviews with school leaders and trustees from 6 MATs and 10 interviews with National Leaders of Governance in looking to respond to the research question: What are the principal drivers for strategic expansion in MATs?<\/p>\n
