Be creative&#8217;<\/a><\/b><\/i>, by\u00a0<b><a title=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/s-j-graham.aspx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/s-j-graham.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"\">Prof. Suzanne Graham<\/a><\/b>\u00a0(Professor of Language and Education, University of Reading) and\u00a0<b><a title=\"https:\/\/www.educ.cam.ac.uk\/people\/staff\/fisher\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.educ.cam.ac.uk\/people\/staff\/fisher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"\">Dr. Linda Fisher<\/a><\/b>\u00a0(Reader in Languages Education, University of Cambridge), is published in the latest issue of the Times Educational Supplement.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" data-ogsb=\"white\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Drawing from the findings of their on-going study, titled\u00a0<b><i>Linguistic Creativity in Language Learning<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(part of the bigger\u00a0Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeml.ox.ac.uk\/\"><strong>Creative Multilingualism<\/strong><\/a> <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">interdisciplinary research project,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"red\">led by Oxford<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">), the article argues that\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"red\">a more stimulating range of teaching materials\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">and more creative teaching approaches have the potential to motivate students to\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"red\">continue with\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Modern Languages at GCSE and beyond. Specifically, the study explores\u00a0the impact of using poems (about such themes as love, death and migration) and different teaching approaches (\u201ccreative\u201d versus \u201cfunctional\u201d) on 14-year-old language learners\u2019 motivation and creativity levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" data-ogsb=\"white\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">The study&#8217;s initial findings are promising with positive\u00a0qualitative feedback from pupils who were taught French and German using\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-ogsc=\"red\">a<\/span><\/i><i><span data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0creative approach<\/span><\/i><span data-ogsc=\"black\">, that is learners engage with the text primarily on the level of personal, emotional and imaginative response, as opposed to being taught\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"red\">through a \u00a0<\/span><i><span data-ogsc=\"black\">functional approach<\/span><\/i><span data-ogsc=\"black\">, where the focus is on the text as a vehicle for teaching language, vocabulary and grammar.
