Dr. Naomi Flynn<\/strong><\/a> (Associate Professor of Primary English Education)\u00a0and Prof. Suzanne Graham<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(Professor of Language and Education) were successful in the 2020-2021 SeNNS supervisor-led collaborative studentship competition.<\/p>\n

SeNSS (The South East Network for Social Sciences) is a consortium of ten leading UK universities who are reputable for cutting-edge social science research and training. Each year, it runs a highly regarded competition where supervisors from across the South East region of England bid for a studentship which will support a doctoral student to work on the supervisor\u2019s proposed research project.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Dr. Flynn and Prof. Graham\u2019s project, titled \u2018Raising EAL learners\u2019 attainment (REAL)\u2019, sets out to evaluate the impact of a research-informed teaching approach on pupils\u2019 English language proficiency and academic attainment and to capture pupils\u2019 responses to changes in their teachers\u2019 practice. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Aspire Community Trust, a collective of schools in Southampton.<\/p>\n

This studentship may be taken as either a 1+3 year award (a one-year Masters followed by a three-year PhD) or a three-year PhD). It may be taken full-time or part-time, and the studentship award fully covers university fees, and provides a stipend of \u00a315,009 per year.<\/p>\n

Dr. Flynn commented that \u201cThis is a very exciting opportunity for a Doctoral student to undertake research that has impact potential built in from the outset. Applied research of this kind is vital for making a positive contribution to teaching and to children\u2019s lives\u201d.<\/p>\n

The studentship will start on or about 1 October 2020, and the deadline for applying to University of Reading for a place is 20 January 2020 (23:59 GMT).<\/p>\n
